Q&A Time!

Let the questions flow! I'm loosely thinking about incorporating some updates on past projects so if you have any questions specific to those drop them below as well! Not limited to 1 question per person. The more the merrier!

What was your favorite project to do for yt so far?

Patttto

Is there going to be another "Side project extravaganza"?

Jé K.

As someone who works in metric, can you explain tenths and thousandths, please?

Danial

I love the manual drafting content. Any suggestions for how to start learning it, and where to get suitable tools for it?

Ralph Marshall

Have you considered machining a woodworking tool or other type of tool, a hand plane, for example?

Danial

Ooh, brilliant - another one! Last one was really interesting to watch. 1) what are your thoughts about video sponsors? Do you get them emailing you? Would you ever consider doing something like that? 2) how come you don’t do any welding? Appreciate that none of the projects you’ve done so far actually required it as such, just general interest 3) far fetched and slightly silly one, but do you think you’ll ever “run out of projects”?(I suspect I know the answer to this one 😂)

Erik D. Radzius

How do you pace yourself? For example, I don’t think I could have started until I restored everything from your grandfathers shop!

Danial

Hi Brandon. I would love to know where you source your power taps.

Jim Henderson

What kind of air filtration, if any, do you use in the shop? I know it's not as bad as some of the stock removal we used to do, but many of the shops I've used have had dedicated grinding rooms with overengineered air purification, and it still didn't help. Why did you decide to become an engineer? Was it anything like you imagined? What editions of Machinery's Handbook do you have? I'm lucky enough to own one that's old enough to still have some blacksmithing information! (it was printed 40 years before I was born, I'm not that old.) If expense wasn't a factor, what would be the project you'd choose to pursue? If you want a design-centric question as opposed to a you-centric question, do you design for failure, such as shear pins or replaceable wear components, or do you expect the wear and out of specification usage in your tools to be minimal?

Michael Faragher

What would you recommend for someone who wants to get into machining, but lives in a one bedroom apartment, are there projects you can do with hand tools?

Danial

I'd love to see an update on the slitting saw arbor- Maybe making the body from a harder material?

Kiwi

If you specifically want to revisit old videos… most of them are perfect 😂😂. I’m currently thinking about stuff like central / automated lubrication systems for the mill and lathe… and adding something intelligent like an arduino to notify me of the required servicing intervals since I won’t be using them constantly.

Nikolaas Noyez

Hi… I love learning how to use the machinery correctly. I just bought a lathe 🫣 but I haven’t used one in 30 years. I learn a lot from watching you and others. Maybe some ‘shorts’ on the things that you find obvious. Tips and tricks. Simple stuff like what tools you use, what type of cutting oil, ..

Nikolaas Noyez

Hi Brandon, I was wondering if some of the tools you made out of tool steel you planned on hardening? Or if some of the tools that see a lot of rough treatment you would make again out of tool steel in order to harden them. I know you like things to be cosmetically pleasing so I was wondering if little dings and scuffs would ever force your hand lol.

Carlo Fenwick

I'd love to see some camera gantry action and know how much it has improved filming efficiency I'd also love to see you take another crack at the clamps you designed for the turn table thing I can't remember the name of 😅

Locane

What piece do you use the most and which do you think came out the best? Also would you be open to trying out some more of the Hemingway kits builds?

troublogaMing

First I love the content, secondly are you up to engineering anything (an old idea I've been working on for years) not that it matters, just some really tight tolerances, .000001 to be exact, and in a small area, but I'm open to suggestions... Are there any plans for making the shop possibly bigger, maybe getting a line boring machine, or a cylinder table for re yielding hydraulic cylinders, mine was big enough to do a 5 stage 235" hico cylinder, was is the key word here... Anyway you can email me if you want to to discuss the first item at... hangman396@gmail.com and we can go from there... Again.love the content, and keep up the good work...

Steve Bussone

Any plans to add something like a 3D printer, CNC plasma, or welder to your shop?

Jeff Loffert

Have you considered taking on one or more apprentices? As I grow older I realize more that passing on skills is key. Obviously, your videos go a long way but hands-on mentorship is hard to beat.

Trevor Flowers

What are some "ideal" upgrades you'd like to make to the shop? If money and time weren't necessarily a concern, what would make your shop "perfect" in your mind?
