(AD FREE) The Joy of Hand Drawing Machining Prints

As a result of not insignificant of scope creep, this next project grew to a bit more than 1 video would do justice. So I took it as an opportunity to answer a lot of the drafting related questions and just generally share my drawing process. Oh... and enjoy some pizza of course.

Enjoy!

I'm a 23 year old psychology student who fell in love with machining and technical drawings at an early age. I obviously don't have the money for any semblance of a machine shop (see: broke college student), so I stick to 3D printing my ideas to keep costs low. Even though that requires CAD (unless I want to type an ungodly amount of gcode by hand - which I cant and wont), I always fully flesh out my ideas on paper with a proper tech drawing before even touching the CAD. I find that it truly helps get the problem-solving juices flowing. All that to say, I really do love seeing your process and hope to see more in the future!

Hey! That's awesome! I didn't have to make any modifications to mine though. Just looking at images of your pencil online, it does look like it could be a tad larger

Brandon - I am now the proud owner of a Dietzgen SharPoint mechanical sharpener. Did you have to file down the opening? The Staedtler 925-35-20 does not quite fit in the opening.

Dennis Shubitowski

Now seems like a good time to try it out 😁

I have all of my father's old drafting kit from back when he was in college. I've never bothered to learn how to use it, unfortunately. P.S. now I want some pizza.

While I enjoy this manual approach I'm glad I never had to contend with t-square stye drafting haha Thanks, Steve!

Great job.when i first saw your videos i went into flashback mode 50 years ago and it all came flooding back! I went online and bought the Paragon an lead sharpener!! So much easier than a tee square and triangles! Thanks Brandon.....

Thanks, PJ 😁 I remember learning all of the fancy compass tricks in my HS drafting classes for bisecting lines, setting up polygons, creating tangent arcs, etc. They are helpful because sometimes they translate really well to the machining processes themselves. Funny you mention the compass leads, I remember using a sanding board in my classes as well! I think it would actually help the lead hold its line weight a bit longer. Thanks again!

Brandon Sander

Well there is the advantage that nothing is freehand! haha

Brandon Sander

This make me want to try out drafting. And I have no drawing skills, so there ya go!

Dennis Shubitowski

Well done and Appreciated, Brandon! You covered a lot of ground in 22 min. Loved your iterative drawing approach to the design which actually saves time, IMHO because I have most of the dims and tolerances by the time I start the final drafting. Having taught board drafting, GDT and ACAD back in the early-late 80', I always thought it was important to teach board drafting first for the Geometry. One wicked project I gave the students was a compound curve fan blade to practice non template size TTR's and line quality. TTR (tangent, tangent, radius) has always been one of my favorite edit tools in ACAD for compound shapes. Noticed you used a pointed lead in your compass, my preference was using a sanding board to create an angled point. And honestly never like the electric erasers much but still use the Staedtler ones you use. Great Job Bud, looking forward to the build!!

PJ

To be fair I did outline the text box in 3H πŸ˜‰ That's not a bad idea for the compass. I'll need to think on that one a bit!

Brandon Sander

Noted! The one in it was pretty hard and a test off camera did exactly like you said haha

Born in '91 so they were forever ago to me πŸ˜‚ though I do remember 2000 like it was just a couple years ago!

My dad used to measure and draw property plans. He had these scale rulers ( google : Rotring Ruler Triangular Reduction Scale 1 )

Free-handing a title, center in a box and even size letters πŸ‘Œ. Wow… this takes me back like 25 years. Oh how I hate drawing ( and calculating) tolerances. And smudging the pencil marks with your resting hands 🫣. Next side-project.. a brass-lay-on-compass-center-pointπŸ€ͺ

Nikolaas Noyez

electric erases were nice but be careful with hard erasers they turn into a drill. The erasers have to be softer and controlled

How to make pizza a business expense, part 1. :D Excellent work as always. Except talking about the 80s like they were forever ago. It was like fifteen years ago. Right? Right? (Ironically my buddy's father had a drafting machine in the 80s)
