(AD FREE) A FANCY Lathe Tool Height Gauge

What do you get when you cross an engineer with a wannabe toolmaker? A lot of over-complicated solutions to problems that probably didn't need solving. But sometimes those solutions end up being useful. At least that's what I'm gonna tell myself!

Enjoy!

That's awesome! And a project I have yet to take on myself. Good luck! Also yes I tend to run dry in most cases where I'm using inserts. Might effect the life slightly, but it's a heck of a lot cleaner 😁

πŸ˜‚ I promise if I could crank these projects (and edits) out faster I absolutely would! Thanks as always!

Another fantastic project and video Brandon. I get excited every time I get the notification that there is a new video available from you then after I watch it in amazement, I realize I have to patiently wait for the next installment LOL. I always look forward to your videos, keep them coming!

Jeffrey Spoor

Hi Brandon! My Dad and I love the videos. He does however always mentions the lack of coolant 😬. I also come from a long line of machinists and am the first in 4 generations to stray from it. There is a maker space near me and I just picked up a bar of steel to try my hand at some 123 blocks. You've inspired me to try and make the ancestors proud!

Carlo Fenwick

Much appreciated as always, PJ. You could always piece together a new setup from ebay for when you have the itch... but it does take up a bit of space! And yeah my eccentric teaser wasn't very helpful πŸ˜‚ you were wise to pass on that one!

Brandon Sander

Thanks!

That’s a great stand !

Totally agree with Vasi about your storytelling and videography...some of the best out there, imho. What I always enjoy is your quality drafting (line Q, details and lettering) While telling a Good story of whats going on in your fine mind. I do miss my 60" pedestal table and Mutoh machine...still kicking myself for letting it go a few years back and the Zen of working on it. So many ways to do this task but very much enjoyed your design and precision approach to making and using it...glad I didn't guess on the eccentric ;-P. Thanks Brandon, Always a Treat!

PJ

Well, as someone who's spent more on home-made automation than if I just bought stuff (computer controlled lighting, I'm looking at you) I get "because it's cool." As an aside, am I over-estimating the flammability concerns about grinding aluminum, or is that dealt with by tools or technique?

Michael Faragher

Sometimes it's hard to beat simplicity! Funny enough I have one now as a backup from that little intro scene 😁 Thanks!

Brandon Sander

I'm already considering revisiting this πŸ˜‚ Didn't occur to me that I missed the opportunity until I was finishing up the project. Doh!

Brandon Sander

I thought about something similar for my lathe, but then the idea with just having a bar cut to a precise length, was too simple not to use it. Once I finish my machine, I think I'll go with a combination between your idea and the simple one. Your story telling and videographic skills are amazing!

Vasi Mihalca

Overly complicated in the name of precision? Yes. But you didn't use, or even make, a magnetic chuck for it, so there's always room to go more complicated.
