With her heightened magical senses and empathy, she can read him just as easily if not better. And that statement . . . the same as an Angel or Devil who gives you a choice to make, and you just blew it.

It was give up the books and willing open his mind to a mind wipe. When someone answers a question or responds to a statement you did not ask. That person is stupid, not listening or you better watch out. They have side step the issue on purpose(s) that don't have your best interests in mind. Do not trust them.
