2024-09-01 16:31:52 +0000 UTCNot only is a not particularly compelling time period, it’s also strange what Disney settled on for when exactly they’d focus on. A mere 100 years before the prequel era? It seems like wanting to have your cake and eat it too, far enough away that it’s a clean slate, but close enough to stuff in the memberries. I also can’t help but wonder if this all is an indirect result of Lucas compressing his own timeline, as brought up a long, long time ago in a Plinkett review. Making 1,000 generations into 1,000 years greatly cut down on the amount of available time, though now that I check, the Knights of the Old Republic games were set around 4,000 years before the OT. So, uh, I’m not actually sure what comments in Star Wars are canon and what aren’t. Which means Disney certainly isn’t… long story short, if you’re going to do High Republic, set it back even further, otherwise you’re just going to eventually make it reference direct lead up to the events of the movies and that’s limiting where the plot can go. Of course, there’s basically no benefit of that which setting it in the Old Republic doesn’t fix and to my eyes, Star Wars super fans (what’s left) seem really keen on that idea. But Disney seems to think that anything that the fans want is the exact opposite of growing the brand…

2024-09-01 14:32:34 +0000 UTCOne thing they didn't touch on in their Acolyte reviews was how 'synthetic' this all was and also how easily foreseeable it's failure was: Disney convened a bunch of writers in, I think, 2018 and worked out all the details of the 'High Republic' era. Many millions spent just on writing overtime. Then they launched it as a huge, heavily promoted series of YA novels and comic books, with the idea that then Phase 2 would be tv shows, video games and movies. Those books landed with a HUGE thud. Nobody gave a care about this concept, *especially* not their hoped-for core audience of teens (make whatever jokes you want to here about Modern Audiences). But d*mm it they were already committed. In terms of Star Wars, this was All They Had so onward they pressed. And so we got the Acolyte, a show nobody wanted based a setting nobody wanted.
