The Fly (1986) - re:View

The Fly (1986) - re:View

Yeah I was surprised to hear him say that, too!

Alex Russell

Haven't seen The Fly in a while, but I wonder how much of the boss's third-act turnaround was a real turnaround. Could he have also seen a way to get rid of the perceived competition while taking on the role of savior? People (or Cronenberg characters) being what they are, it was probably a mix. As a kid I saw TV commercials for a Superfly sequel. I was totally baffled at why there was no superhero in a fly costume onscreen. What a difference Cronenberg would have made to that experience.

Kurt

I don't. They're all three great movies.

casey

"Videodrome" is the only movie I've ever seen, that truthfully can be called "visionary"... ... ... eat shit and die, Zack Snyder...

Manuel Johnen

Or to relieve himself from the nightmare of being a monster fused with a machine, painfully and slowly crawling on the floor.

Juan Calvo

Inspired by this video watched Videodrome. It is easily my top-10 movies. What a fantastic prediction of what social media is going to be like in its final form. Violence! Sexual deviance! Paranoia! Another re:View-vorthy movie feat Jay.

Juho Lepistö

Such a disturbing movie. I saw it a few times at the theater and maybe once on video. I don’t think i could watch it again. A Re:View of Scanners would be good. Maybe a whole Cronenberg marathon!

Mike St Louis

You should add the Shakma! trailer clip to all RLM videos.

andrew

I haven’t thought of MonsterVision in decades. That, and Spinetingler Theater on Saturday afternoons, were my introduction to 70s and 80s horror movies - albeit edited for cable.

andrew

It's about family. Or maybe no one locks their doors in Canada, as Michael Moore taught the world.

Juan Calvo

And no one in the department store stared at the fight. Not even a wide eyed stare at the floor.

Not a single person enters a building in a normal way. All the sudden, they’re in your house.

She never considered an EPO. He refuses to give her key back. Where’s HR?!

SHUT YOUR MOUTH THAT MAN IS A TREASURE. I hope he lives to play the 2000-year-old man literally!

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

I remember seeing 'The Fly' in the theatre in '86. It was the same summer as 'Aliens' - a movie which blew me away, while 'The Fly' grossed me out. (You can guess which one I saw 3x in the theatre and which one I only saw once and didn't rewatch again for a few years.)

DonMac

"Philip Kaufman is one of those directors who doesn't get anything close to the credit he deserves. He's brilliant." Listen to his commentary track for 2004's "Twisted", he's a pretentious fuck that's vanished so far up his own ass you can't even see him anymore...

Manuel Johnen

"The 1976 Invasion of the Body Snatchers is absolutely amazing." Amazing they released that movie two years before it was made... Also, I don't like it. Ferrara's "Body Snatchers" from 1993 is much better.

Manuel Johnen

"I'm not that familiar with David Cronenberg's early stuff." COLIN WHAT. You're Canadian and you work in visual effects. I've never been so disappointed in you. You're not my son anymore!!

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

The 1976 Invasion of the Body Snatchers is absolutely amazing. I recently bought the Arrow Video release. Well worth it. Philip Kaufman is one of those directors who doesn't get anything close to the credit he deserves. He's brilliant. EDIT: Honestly, I don't even see any of these as "remakes." The 2011 The Thing is a remake. These others are basically their own movies very very loosely adapted from the original concepts.

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

Roxy Music is so fucking good. Everything through Country Life is amazing. And Bryan Ferry did some pretty cool stuff on his own, but this song definitely isn't part of it :P

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

Jay, will you and Mike (possibly Rich too) review Alien Romulus?

Michael Gussler

I rewatched this movie recently and couldn't help but think that in this movie a woman of a bygone era is resigned to deal with 2 creepy men, the horror being the realization of who is the creepiest in terms of having the most twisted sense of morality. And the 80s yuppie in this 80s movie becoming the least egregious alternative, I'm sure that means something.

Juan Calvo

Regarding the mysteriously omitted song, 'Help Me' by Bryan Ferry, it's not on Spotify, but you can find a remarkably uninspired music video for it on YouTube ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg-Yte9X1go ), slapping a handful of shots from the trailer in for good measure. It's kind of a synth-y mess, so it makes sense that they'd leave it out. That being said, while looking around for this song, I stumbled into a DIFFERENT Bryan Ferry song, his own version of a 1970 Kris Kristofferson tune, 'Help Me Make It Through The Night'. Remarkably, I think Ferry's version of this song would have made a pretty darn decent end theme. It starts with a great, slow, plodding heartbeat-like bass line with soft lyrics gently convincing a woman not to leave. The lyrics are poetic and kinda spot-on. Then, for an absurd comedy beat, the chorus kicks in with country electric guitars. In fact, I just played the movie and the end song side by side; I love it!

neuracnu

Shakmaaaaaa! This movie traumatized me as a kid and now I love it, still bawl like a baby when he pulls the shotgun up to his head, only thinking of Jordy Verrill makes me laugh again

Elizabeth Thompson

Sehr gut

You should do more official inductions into the BotW Hall of Fame. Typhoon should be in.

bootblacking

As usual, Typhoon really ties the movie together. Never heard of the other actors. Colin's story is on par with Mike's Joe Pilato story (starring Michael Berryman).

Bill Wilson

Pending RIP to Mel Brooks

'The Fly' remake took the original and upped the horror element. 'The Thing' remake took the original and upped the horror element. 'The Blob' remake took the original and upped the horror element. 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' took the original and upped the horror element. I think there may be a pattern here for good remakes.

DonMac

Cool discussion. Thank you RLM!

AllGoodNamesRGone

Great re:View. Thank you!

Marvin Falz

I really like how The Fly ends. The final monster form isn't that horrifying to me, because Seth Brundle has completely lost his human body at that point. The horror comes from his transformation, but I just love that character moment where Brundle aims the shotgun at his head to relieve her from guilt.

Marvin Falz

I hate that "The Blob" is somehow lumped in with those other two movies...

Congrats on doing The Holy 80s Horror Trifecta: The Thing The Blob The Fly - You have completed the Trinity of best horror remakes of the 80s.

AshesBoomstick

Gasp! My favorite movie! One of the few perfect films.
