Is this the conversation in which Jay brings up the Chucky tv series? I have to thank him for the rec, because somehow it escaped me and now I'm a thoroughly enjoying it/minorly obsessed.

Not sure if you guys have seen it yet but “You’ll Never Find Me” was one of the best looking horror films I’ve seen in 2024. Honestly one of the better films of the year. Check it out

sure but "misery porn" doesn't seem quite correct for clark's or harmony's movies.

Everything Larry Clark is involved in is miserable...

"Gummo", "Kids" and "Bully" are this magical late 90s/early 2000s triumvirate of miserablism.

One was either a baby in 1999 when Phantom Menace came out or you were a teenager two years before in 1997 and you understand that the best Star Wars film ever was The Fifth Element.

Very few people in their 20s liked The Phantom Menace when it was released the first time in theaters, and I know it because I was there to be disappointed and in denial. But some of the little kids and babies who went to see the movie are grown ups now, plus more than 20 years of getting used to crap, so now we are in danger of this thing becoming the new standard of quality and nostalgia, as some of these former children consumers acquire positions of influence. That George Lucas was playing the long game.

When you guys talk about cursing in media these days, that's a pet peeve of mine, I hate it so much. I especially hate it when characters curse in modern slang, but the story is set in medieval times (and not a comedy show). You can't just blame kids discovering cursing, I think it's much worse than that: middle age gen xers who got more "civilized" in our neo liberal dystopia write this kind of garbage, make money with it and then younger generations adopt the trend as something "cool". Out of place, weak, unfunny, "I still have some rebel in me" type of cursing.

Cool to see you guys talking about movies like Love lies Bleeding, Last Stop in Yuma County, Lousy Carter, and all the other "oddball" stuff. That's what I wanna see on HITB, not the mainstream shit necessarily. And after your review I need to watch The Iron Claw now.....

Star Wars... ...that still exists. But the Plinkett reviews are great. Informative and entertaining. And so is the Return of the Jedi commentary track. The commentary track made me wonder if the whole Jabba's palace sequence could be re-edited to be shorter, more logical, but still be entertaining and understandable for a general audience. I think the sequence could not be re-edited in the suggested way, you'd have to rewrite the whole sequence, or rather make its own standalone adventure movie out of it. I think that's what they should have done. Keep the tone of The Empire Strikes Back, and a couple of years after the release of Return of the Jedi make a 'rescue Han Solo' adventure movie.

I actually still like Force Awakens quite a bit, but Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker definitely sit at the bottom of the barrel with the prequels as being godawful trash. Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker gave Attack of the Clones a serious run for its money. I've never even bothered watching Rise of Skywalker in full and have only seen embarrassing clips. But yeah - as anyone with an IQ above room temperature knows, Star Wars hasn't truly been in good hands since it peaked in 1980, and there's a very strong argument to be made that it was never actually in good hands at any point.
Star Wars' endurance is a spacetime anomaly that will continue to be studied by scientists for generations.

Yes. It's amazing how the badness of the sequels has laundered the badness of the prequels. Like theres this insistence that Good Star Wars must surely exist and if This is bad then That must be good.
It's just "I hate sand" and "They fly now" in alternating layers all the way down.

Just a few more hours and the review would have lasted longer than the hotel ever did...

2024-05-22 23:30:00 +0000 UTC
For a while now I've honestly been wishing you'd share some sort of response to the smoothbrained change in perception to the prequels we've seen in recent years, but I've also understood why you've obviously had no apparent interest in bothering with that. So hearing you guys poke at that topic briefly when you touched upon the Phantom Menace rerelease was very welcome.
God, the people who defend those movies and praise them as being good films are dumb. And that's coming from someone in their 20s who actually likes the prequels for a few reasons in spite of them objectively being awful trash films. The only people dumber than the people who uphold those movies as being good films are the idiots who angrily blame RedLetterMedia for "bullying George Lucas into selling Star Wars," as if the blame for the Star Wars franchise sucking somehow falls upon somebody who made a video criticizing it on the internet and not Lucas, a billionaire who made the choice to sell the franchise for 4 billion dollars after singlehandedly ruining it and who we apparently now need to feel sorry for.
Now, as much as I'd like to continue this schizoid rant that nobody will ever read, I'm afraid I've depleted my entire supply of crack rocks.

Alien Hunt was screened here at Cannes, critics praised the subtlety of the metaphor and the absurdity of an obviously artificial rubber suit monster, and "hunters" pretending to run after each other in the woods.
It's all about man encroaching on nature, really.

I watched a low-budget, narrowly distributed film very much like Alien Hunt. In fact it almost had the same title, except that 'Hunt' was spelled differently.

"The Wolf of Snow Hollow" (aka "American Werewolf meets Fargo") isn't great and Cumming's character is extremely unlikable in it, but it's worth a look for the last screen appearance of Robert Forster (R.I.P.).

The Phantom Menace being hated on was all Mr. Plinkett's fault, he's jealous, he's holding Star Wars back.
