I wonder if it’s all about dopamine hits now. Movies with a big load of nostalgia offer a sweet fix to older fans who grew up with the originals, but not so much to a younger audience. Or…if the only stories being told are references to what’s already been told, why look for stories at all?

So now there's a rivalry where they both show up to some incident and they start arguing with each other. Or the Ghostbusters show up to a scene and the other guys already caught the ghost because they're "better". And when the ultimate monster comes around, he obliterates the rivals, so now the Ghostbusters have to do something outside the box to stop the big bad ghost. Almost like Twister. There are things that can be done that aren't stupid.

Were there like ten big movies that went down to failure and everyone talked it over and agreed: "obviously not gay enough." One of the worst financial failures ever was "Strange World" 'cause, oops, families don't actually want their children to watch stories about gay teenagers. Tawdry and bigoted? Maybe. But there really is no model for scolding people into paying for diversity. The Bud Light boycott is still on and still working.

What I gather is that "Hollywood" has always been focused on the money, but at least the artists Hollywood exploited have had a life and obstacles to overcome and they had a vision, while oversaturated younger generations, who need to declutter/detox from social media to have a life at all, grew and grow up in Schlaraffenland and they hate it. Mike already touched on this in previous RLM productions a couple of years ago.

2024-03-23 21:52:03 +0000 UTCWhen it comes to nostalgia, we're obviously in a death spiral. 1) You pitch nostalgia to because it makes it easier to get a movie green lit; 2) The "creatives" don't understand what made the originals great so they shit out some bland mediocrity or, worse, something offensive to the spirit of the original; 3) Poor performance makes it harder harder to get a movie green lit; 4) Go to 1.
