A friend pointed out to me that the end titles music for the new movie has a cover version of electronic music artist Klaus Schulze's 1978 synth track "Frank Herbert" within it. So now I need to listen to the score to hear that.

Almost forgot, thank you for discussing the Toto score! I was hooked on the music after one viewing of the film. I love listening to it when I work too! It seems to be one of those soundtracks that transcends its origin film in quality and/or influence (rare occurrence IMO). The prime example for me is Blade Runner. I mostly love the film but have some issues, however the soundtrack is pure excellence and outshines everything else. It makes my mind travel and doesn’t just remind me of its origin film.

The 1984 "Dune" is - like every single thing David Lynch ever did, imo - epic horseshit with scenes of inexplicable weirdness and crude details inserted into it seemingly at random... but those giant sandworms are goddamn awesome. Have to give it that...
Considering all the money and effort that went into the movie, it's just not worth it, though...

Leave it to these hack frauds to defend Dune(1984). I re-watched it last week and it was so much worse than I even remembered. Between the exposition dumps, the confusing action scenes, and the infuriating whispered internal monologues, it is a total nightmare.

You've talked about this before, and I don't get it. Of course he knows how to say Villeneuve; he lives in Canada, and Canada has a very large French-speaking population. Do you know how to pronounce every Korean movie you watch? Or Japanese movies in their original language? Normally, they would just change the title to English. I'm not even sure why it ended up being called "Das Boot" in North America. But, unless you know how to pronounce the foreign title of every movie, you shouldn't really expect anyone else to either.

I'm old enough (aka I'm old) to have seen David Lynch's "Dune" during its original theatrical release. That was a time when everyone got up to leave the theatre as soon as the end credits started rolling and immediately talked about the movie while walking out. And I remember someone nearby call it a "masterpiece" and someone else call it a "confusing mess" back then. In hindsight, both true!

Thanks for the re:View. Glad you spent some time on Lynch's version. Strange as it is and horrible as the ending is, it's a guilty pleasure and an interesting piece of filmmaking. I enjoyed DV's version but I just found it lacking ... something. I can't put a finger on it. The cast was good, the plot beats followed the books pretty well with a few minor exceptions that can be lived with. The world building is wonderful, music is good though maybe too much sometimes, the pacing felt strange at times. I took my family and my wife and kids enjoyed it having no prior knowledge of the world so I think DV did a good job introducing this world to new people. I'm looking forward to part 2 and hopefully 3 and more. The middle books are just great.

Duncan's death is odd in both movies because believe it or not, without spoiling anything, this is a MAJOR deal. I can't explain more without ruining your enjoyment of any potential sequels. Had they spent a little more time with him and Paul it might have had more of an impact. They do it better in this movie than Lynch's but the effect is still the same for someone not familiar with the series. Highly recommend the books, keep in mind it was written in the 1960's...

Kind of the opposite here, I knew everything about it from having read the books multiple times and seen the Lynch and part of the Sci Fi channel adaption. I also had chills, the score is great, but sometimes a bit relentless. I think DV did a nice job making the material easier for anyone to get into. If it brings more interest to the series as a whole I say mission accomplished regardless of how much money it makes. Definately excited for part two and hopefully 3 (second book, where it really starts to get interesting!)

I think the best thing I can say about the new "Dune" was that it actually really made me want to read the book, because I thought as constructed, it was a really bad movie (save for the atmosphere/visuals, which I understand is a big component). It had many components that I would have loved to see more of, but characters were under-developed, and the plot was incredibly empty and shallow without any context. There was no weight to anything, despite the attempts to give it. Duncan sacrificing himself? He died?? OH NO, NOT DUNCAN!!!!! *cue Colin's impression of the music*

Dune is one David Lynch movie, I know I will never want to watch again, because the story doesn't interest me at all. I also don't care for "weird for the sake of weird." I did rewatch the so-called Los Angeles Trilogy last week, though. On three consecutive days, first one of the Naked Gun trilogy, then immediately after that one of the Los Angeles Trilogy. Now I understand the "the prequels ruined Star Wars" sentiment better, because I came up with the name Laura Pimmler, and when I rewatched Fire Walk With Me, during some of the most horrific scenes, I had to think of that stupid name, and that made me laugh. But besides that, my appreciation of David Lynch's way of story-telling, and especially of recurring motifs, that allow me to connect, for example, Inland Empire with the last episode of Twin Peaks: Return has become deeper.

Glad you finally gone and Dune it so folks will calm down. I’m still not sure I’m ready to watch the new one though. Why it’s generally rated far higher than Enemy is beyond my understanding.

(EDIT: Sorry for the length!) Yay! Colin! Anyway, I had a lot of problems with the new Dune. I haven't read the books (as RLM has noted before, you shouldn't need to read books to enjoy a movie), but I think Denis Villeneuve is possibly the best new director of the past two decades, and I've either extremely enjoyed or was absolutely spellbound by everything he's done up to this point. My issues with his Dune are myriad, though none are in the visuals (they hold up even on a 54 inch OLED in the bathtub. Yes, I watched this while taking a bath, but that actually means that I was completely focused on it and nothing else). As usual, the visuals are great, and they do give a sense of the world. But the plot simply isn't well-explained. I get the broad strokes. House Atreides is being given control of the only planet that produces spice after 80 years of if being controlled by the Harkonnen. It turns out that this is a mere ruse, and that Harkonnen are in league with the emperor to destroy the Atreides once they've committed their resources to the spice planet. Since it seems that Harkonnen alone has the military power to destroy the Atreides, and they're even combining it with the Emperor's military, why even go through this charade? Meanwhile, when Atreides lands on the spice planet, they note that they've been left with garbage equipment that can barely harvest spice at the pace necessary. If they're going to ambush Atreides anyway, and if spice is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN THE GALAXY, why not let them collect as much spice as possible before ambushing and destroying them? Spice is the most important thing ever, and only on this planet, and yet they're giving the mining operation over to Atreides just to do this ambush plot, so the spice mines will be basically nonfunctional for months while this plays out, with transferring the rights, setting up a new mining operation, and coordinating the eventual ambush. Why? Next, we have the fact that the son of House Atreides's leader is a sort of half-human, half-whatever-those-people-who-are-hundreds-of-years-old-and-have-telepathy-and-see-the-future-and-have-mind-control. These people aren't explained almost AT ALL, at least as far as I can tell. All i got from the movie is that they have telepathy/mind control, are secretive, and apparently have a VERY long-term plan for how things will play out (centuries long!). Next is the Emperor. Why did the Atreides doctor stab their house in the back, only to use his poison to try and kill the emperor? Apparently to get the Emperor to "release [his] wife from [the[ eternal torment" the Emperor has locked her in? But the Emperor says the doctor will see her when he kills the doctor, so what is that eternal torment? Because it sure sounds like mere death to me. And so the emperor is poisoned, but, surprise! All he has to do is get in a tub of goo to be totally fine again. Either the doctor didn't know this, or something else doesn't make sense, because the doctor seems truly saddened by the fact that he betrayed House Atreides. And these are just SOME of my issues with the muddled explanation of the world and its plots. I haven't even dived into the spice planet people, and several other things.
Has anyone else had this experience? Am I crazy? Am I missing a whole batch of things?
Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

So nice to see Colin! The Canadians are among my favourite guests. I’ll have to go back and watch the original movie - I always liked it but it felt like a misfire somehow. And yeah the last chunk of the movie falls apart badly. One of my least favourite Lynch films but it’s true… it’s just so weird that it’s perfect for a discussion like this. Haven’t seen the new one yet but I’ve been hearing great things.

I managed to not really absorb anything through osmosis about the plot of Dune from like, society or the internet, all I knew was something about spice and sand and some dude with a messiah complex. But I adored it, it’s everything I love about slow-burn, sprawling, intergalactic sci-fi. Like I haven’t gotten chills from a movie for a while but I got them multiple times during this. Especially the first worm scene, that shit was perfectly paced and scored to deliver the most amount of tension, plus the reveal of just how massive the worms really are. Them some big ass worms.
“He takes weird things and treats them like they’re not weird” yes yes I love when filmmakers just fucking tell a story without feeling the need to explain stuff. Villeneuve trusts the audience to understand that this is a different world with different cultures and different technology and that knowing that, people will accept what he puts in front of them because there’s context and reasoning and he’s a real filmmaker who cares about filmmaking, what a concept.
Also I wanna know what Mike thinks.
