Malignant

We saw Malignant. We shot a Half in the Bag on Malignant. We had a lot to say about Malignant.

Comments

I loved it, it had body horror and a lot of homages to classics like Carrie, Exorcist, The Thing, Halloween, etc. The ending sucked but it was still weird as hell and I give it props for not being afraid to be as weird as it was.

Geekyalbatross

Shocked to see RLM reviewing a horror movie for once...

Dustin Baugh

happy birthday Jay!

Adam

I’m paying a whole two dollars a month, I want my content now dammit!!!

I'm interested in hearing RLM's opinion on this and James Wan. Like I respect his talent and his ability to cross over into big budget movies, but I think outside of the original Saw I really don't care for his horror output. I feel like other horror directors of his generation, he relies way too much on the jump scare. If there's anything I could take away from modern horror movies, it'd be the jump scare. It's used way too often.

AllGoodNamesRGone

I can’t say I ever cared for James Wan’s horrors (demonic/haunting genre just doesn’t grip me) but this seems to be borrowing heavily from Romero’s/King’s The Dark Side, minus the smarts. Once the twist is revealed, you think back to a number of scenes from earlier on in the movie and they just don’t make sense - they’re not misdirections, they just downright contradict the inner logic of the movie, is not campy enough to join the ranks of Troll 2 or Zombi 3 and it’s not scary enough as a straight up slasher/horror. I enjoyed the “happy” ending tho…for once.

Alessio Roic

I hope so.

Jessie Zimmer

Fuck cancer amirite

Rhea

The acting was stiff and the pacing was off, but that last half hour was some campy, unexpected, B-movie shenanigans. Pure drive-in fun. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

The reviewer score actually makes sense. The movie is shot beautifully, he mixes like 36 different filming styles into the movie, and there's clearly talent behind the camera. Now if only they hadn't improved the entire film, writing each scene down literally as they were being preformed in some weird "Whose line is it anyway" style. I was so excited going into this because i do "Generally" like the Conjuring series and I loved the first Saw. I'm not sure why the storytelling in this was so bad.

damien glenn

This was so fun to watch. I laughed out loud a dozen times. It was definitely self-aware. 80’s B movie. Specific ones come to mind. Must watch!

I've tried to watch this one three times, now, and I just can't make it through. It's just dumb.

Saw it last night. I really did not like it. A few interesting ideas (kind of) but it didn’t feel coherent, and man were those musical stings annoying.

fxdpt

HITB for Max Magician and the Legend of the Ten Rings?

Chris L

Coagulent

James E Carrey

James (slow=suspense) Wan

James E Carrey

loved this movie.

Eustace Cranch

Really looking forward to what you hack frauds have to say about it. I made the mistake of not turning my brain off while watching, which had a seriously adverse impact on my viewing pleasure. As did expecting any character or plot consistency. Otherwise me, personally, I would have loved this movie...... Oh and I hope you'll talk about the music too. The music choices in this are downright hilarious at times!

schopi

I don't know why Disney keeps going on about family. I've met my family and most of them are cunts.

Tarami Bedona

Probably take them 2 days to edit, could be tonight or tomorrow night

hamish smith

Scariest part of the whole movie. Spoilers! https://youtu.be/ZtyxJSGM3x0

Nathan Wadden

What’s going to be the next adjective-title James Wan horror movie? Poignant? Indignant? Chromulent?

Alessio Roic

One of the best comedies I’ve seen in a while. I spent an hour and a half thinking, “This thing is happening. No if this thing is happening, this scene doesn’t make sense. But this thing really seems to be happening. No, this scene wouldn’t make sense,” and so on. And then you find out the thing is happening and it’s stupider than you could have possibly imagined. It currently has a 74% reviewer score of Rotten Tomatoes.

Joe Triscari

Is this going to be a 45 minute ponderous zoom-in on Mike's face while Jay's incoherent tangents on indie horror become increasingly muffled in the background?

Tarami Bedona

They gave me hope.

PaPa

I love that RLM just gets straight to the point about what they are up to. No salutations, no punch line. "We watched a bad movie. Let's discuss said bad movie."

Bort Ward

"Malignant" sounds like something that belongs in the RLM internetverse.

Juan Calvo

It's just a weird big budget take on 80s and early 90s horror schlock. The whole "it's James Wan's take on giallo films" is something of a red herring - aside from some of the aesthetics (red and blue colours in the lighting a la Suspiria, the black coat and gloves etc, slasher aspect, wacky dialogue and plotting etc). It's really just a Frank Henenlotter riff, Basket Case and Brain Damage in particular... to the point where he should probably get royalties... The over the top acting, cinematography etc is kind of the point. I can see people hating this movie if they expected to be scared, or to take it seriously. Although the tonal shift stuff was really jarring. Take $20m off the budget and ditch the CGI and you have a Dark Castle movie of the early 90s with a big dose of direct to video 80s stuff (including Demons I and II) and a touch of late 70s Italian stuff... Thing is, it doesn't lean hard enough into all that to really work as a loving parody. You want a fun proper giallo satire, The Editor is way better on that front. Of course, in the end, it's about family, and that's what's so powerful about it.

PWD

both

Adam W Johnson

Horrible, awful movie. But somehow it was amazing

Hack frauds, made it seems like the episode was up already!

Stan Tsirulnikov

i can't even imagine.

VHS VCR

it was so silly but at least that crime scene girl was hot

Trippy86

This movie was so much fun and best of all it felt fresh and wild! Bless James wan for just going balls to the wall and giving us something fun and fresh.

Adriana Lee Lopez

I knew it! I watched it and now I'm so pumped for the review.

Michael Parker

Man, this movie had some of the worst acting I've seen in a long time.

Justin Stoll

this was my favorite Stephen King novel (The Dark Half), but of course he wrote it better. still the movie was entertaining enough and had its merits in the first 3/4.

Peter Varga

There's a muppet?

Jonas...

It reminded me of Basket Case

Yeah I thought the video would be out. We're waiting!

Rudy Casale

Says the guy who starred in David Lynch's worst garbage... :P

Manuel Johnen

I’m so ready for this.

rachel

They got that aged and haggard actresss Rich Evans, a faded star of the Golden Age of the Silver Screen. She's seen better days.

Dirrdevil

That Treehouse of Horror story did have a twist. Original Bart was the evil twin and the deformed one had a heart of gold.

Dirrdevil

One of the worst films I’ve ever seen. I like silly schlock but at TWO HOURS James Wan is being arrogant. as. fuck. Trash but not good trash. There are scenes (especially the first 5-10 minutes) that are straight out of a BOTW movie. The acting and writing throughout are abysmal.

Kyle McLachlan

It was pretty damn close lol

Ken Harris

I really enjoyed the first half of the movie until the abrupt tone change. Then I couldn't roll my eyes hard enough. Honestly if I KNEW it was going to end like that I probably would have liked it way more! Oh well I can't wait to hear what they say.

Ken Harris

Here’s my review of the film in the comment section of the announcement of the recording of the review of the film I’m now reviewing.

Gary Probert

Two back to back Horror HITB episodes? Is Plinkett going to get possessed by the ghost of Herman Cain?

Gary Probert

An absolute blast of a film. So many styles and aesthetics being thrown at you, some stick some don’t but it was incredible

Also as a Seattleite all the made up neighborhoods and hospitals were funny. “We need to get to Seattle Hospital in the Washington district!” is about as lazy as it comes haha.

Shempin Jack Flash

Hack frauds be frauding. Where is it?

A F

I freaking loved this movie, so damn entertaining

James Dayen

It completely fails to be scary, but if you like 80s horror schlock it's fun over-the-top insanity. The old school production and practical effects helped too.

Martin Polden

I like these short updates. Gives me a lot more time to…. idk….

Richard Klos

So it wasn't a new Pixar film about the characterization of a young tumor? Son I am disappoint.

David Arcaine

Totally just requested this in the Community Board. Can’t wait to watch your guys’ take on this uneven crazy ass movie.

Shempin Jack Flash

It's pure schlock. Your enjoyment will depend on how much you enjoy intentionally ridiculous shenanigans. I had a great time. If the movie took itself seriously, it would have been a turd.

it was complete schlock and i laughed hard at the police fight scene, what a ridiculous film

hamish smith

I thought it was hilariously bad but apparently it’s actually a masterpiece and I missed the point. So fuck me, I guess.

Goldy Loxx

I think it was the first scene with the lady tied up in the attic I said "did they just make a movie about that treehouse of horror episode of the simpsons with barts evil twin?" And yes, yes they did. But with a twist! "Too crazy for boys town, too much a boy for crazy town"

Max McCord

Saw it on a drive on theater last night 10/10 want to own physical copy. So good bad it's art.

Great! Saw it this weekend and its a fun 80s-style body horror movie. I was hoping it would be on HITB.

Martin Polden

Do you remember when they hung that guy up by his nipples in The Last King Of Scotland? Ah, good times.

Anthony Dowd

Having a lot to say about something does not bode well these days.

Connor Martin

Malignant

Curtis

I've heard it's a turd. Also, no HITB on The Green Knight??

Tony Dupre

I'm sure it was scary. But not for the right reasons.

AshesBoomstick

I had so much fun watching Malignant with my friends. We had no idea what it was and watched it release night, and had a blast laughing. Incredible film, probably for the wrong reasons.

Ryan Kain

YES

Randal Smith

You mean you didn't go see the new marvel movie? I didn't know you guys were so anti-asian! /s

Daniel Carlson

It broke new ground

p a turone

A tumour

Lewis Taylor

My ligmas

Conor

I think so. I heard they got Fran Drescher, and she laughs the entire movie

TheSingingBush

Was it borderline experimental? Did it break new ground? We're there at least any superheroes or lightsabers?

Steve

what's malignant

Jazz Jackrabbit

it was so silly but at least that one guy was hot

boobery

I don't believe you.

Jaakko Riutta

Good or bad?

Rel

I thought it was a fun movie 🤷‍♂️ Dumb, but fun.
