Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone - re:View

Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone - re:View

Comments

I just realized that I mixed up "Space Hunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone" with "Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn". Understandable given that both were released in 1983, both were in 3D, and both suck.

DonMac

"[...] I like clean well-lit places in my life, but when I sit down and start thinking, I can go to Philadelphia. It’s like looking in, but if things get heavy, then you can leave. It makes you feel comfortable and happy, so you can think of other things and concentrate on ideas. If you’re miserable you can’t create." (1982)" https://www.youtube.com/post/UgzonClK1Wwe6RzQS5B4AaABCQ

Marvin Falz

Totally agree

Karen Morvan

I had similar experiences watching this and Ice Pirates on tv when I was young and really enjoying them. Only one of these kind that hasn’t let me down as an adult is Cherry 2000, though I haven’t seen that in at least 10 years or so.

Leo Puppytime

Blues Brothers Re:View is would be fantastic- You guys have brought it up somewhat over the years; a full Re:View needs to happen!

Sammy Baker

More Rich and Jay Reviews please!

Fei

When are you reViewing 1994's Oblivion? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5buqVnYiswA

Heather Sejnow

"... and populated by an improbable number of handsome but dumb Australian dudes." I feel like there might be a Hemsworth brothers + quarantine joke in here somewhere.

Jessie Zimmer

How about “Nostalgia Critics”?

Jackson

You Have to do The Ice Pirates it's brilliant especially the cast and where they went after

The Thinking Cat...Former Cthulhu Pofit Neo Normie and Masked fat guy but now a Cat ??

Pyrite is alright with me will pyrite is not right with me gold is better it gets the pussy wetter 🎶

Ricardo Rodriguez

Yep, as a teen in the 80’s, movies taught me the future would be post-nuclear and populated by an improbable number of handsome but dumb Australian dudes.

Katy

Great re:View. The only disappointment is it means you guys will probably never review "Ice Pirates" which would be a far better subject (target?) for re:View.

DonMac

RIch, you're not the only one! I grew up watching "Space Hunter" and "Ice Pirates" as a kid. Yeah, they haven't aged well, but I do feel that "Ice Pirates" was more cheeky and fun than "Space Hunter." I never watched "Tammy and the T-Rex" or "Mac and Me." For the next re:View You guys should do "Sneakers" aka The Masterpiece That Time Forgot.

Nathan Paul Simons

Yeah, I watched Ice Pirates waay more than Spacehunter - I was old enough when they came out to know they were super cheese (especially compared to the shining star of my 9th summer, RoTJ), But the humor of Ice Pirates made up for it - space herpes, etc.

Matthew Riley

I remember watching and loving Spacehunter when I was younger. It came out when I was 9, which is apparently the perfect age to enjoy it.

Jeremy Allen

Jay and Rich talking about Siskel and Ebert - a review of a review inside a re:View.

rachel

It's interesting to hear Rich as the expert on a particular film rather than Jay (although Jay's knowledge is still formidable, even for a little-known film.)

Bort Ward

I'm still waiting for the Prince of Darkness Re:View. Like this comment if you want that Re:View. Actually, hit it no matter what.

Silentphil9

Another great re:View! And the ICE PIRATES mention was awesome... That was one I saw MANY times as a kid!

Quick glance I originally thought that they had dug up Ice Pirates and was like yes! That would be a fun one to rehash.

Lisa

I could go for a re:View of Sixteen Candles.

Amy Hitchner

I've never seen this, but going to look into it based on how happy Jay and Rich genuinely seemed while talking about it. Also, glad to see Rich sporting a Pacman shirt again!

Sarzac

Hey, all that matters is whether you're happy. Plus, you got to spend four years learning about something you love, and I bet work as an animator would be a lot less steady!

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

The mention of Siskel's notorious bad takes on horror movies, reminded me that I made a bad argument a couple of months ago, when I wrote that Transcendental Meditation doesn't seem to really work, because David Lynch's art in every medium has a dark side to it. Now I think that I conflated the artist with his art. In other words, I argued if David Lynch's art is dark, then David Lynch himself must be dark. And that argument is similar to the argument that art is responsible for the world's problems. If art is dark, then people, who watch dark art, must become dark themselves. Both arguments are wrong.

Marvin Falz

I hope you're gonna do Ice Pirates next! I loved that movie when I was a kid, but I haven't seen it in like 23 years... it's gotta hold up, right?

I like the idea of doing more of these nostalgic trip Re:views. Masters of the Universe is my version of Spacehunter. I loved it as a kid, and realize now how weird and trashy it is... although the score is still legitimately amazing!

Whoever painted Jay onto that poster did an okay job. Almost as good as his action figure.

Ian

I f-ing love this movie. I'm one of those dumb kids, because to this is day, I still love it. I guess a friend of my dad told him about this movie. So on a whim my dad decided that we were going to the movie theater to watch it. On a school night! I forgot that it was in 3-D but the entire family loved this movie. Ice Pirates was also popular in our household. I was going through puberty when we watched Spacehunter and I have to admit, it wasn’t horny or creepy enough for me. I wanted them to delve deeper into the pervy realm. And I thought Michael Ironside’s Overdog was bad ass. I loved his villainy and the way he looked. Great costume. Favorite movie quotes: Overdog: You have a very enviable life force, a life force you’re going to share with me. Nicki: But…you said if I made it through, I’m free. Overdog: I lied! Side note, Heavy Metal made me want to be an animator and I truly thought it was my destiny. I got a bachelor’s degree in Animation but turns out I’m the William Hung of animators. I sucked and now I’m a factory worker. It’s all good though.

I seriously think that Ivan Reitman took things (er, people) he thought were good from this movie, and used them for "Ghostbusters".

AshesBoomstick

I think you guys need a new show where you watch movies you remember loving as a child, but haven't seen since. A show solely for reevaluating (and thus usually stomping all over) happy childhood memories. Dream Destroyers. I don't know. I'm not going to spend time trying to come up with a good title. That's why I pay you guys the big bucks!

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

I'm with you on wondering about Roger Ebert and horror movies. What's weird is that he programmed at least two of them at his annual film fest: "The Cell" and "Let the Right One In". Maybe it was OK as long as the movies were about something besides stabbing?

Kurt

Battle Beyond the Stars would be another movie like this. It's a far better movie, but it doesn't really fit with any of your other series.

Adam C.

What?

Dr Trash

I started to wonder if you could do a history of annoying sidekicks in fantasy movies, but that's way more punishment than you deserve. You're off the hook this time!

Kurt

I could literally watch you guys talk about anything.

Michael Parker

I would like to see Mak's idea applied to Starship Invasions, a 1977 science fiction film with Robert Vaughn and Christopher Lee that got completely swamped by Star Wars. It took itself very seriously. Aliens were trying to take over the Earth by getting everybody to commit suicide. I remember a lurid Time Magazine cover with stylized bloody slit wrists in the movie and thinking, Time let them do this? My Dad took us because we had loved Star Wars. This one also had robots, but absolutely no sense of fun.

Michael Puttré

I also remember my friend and I laughing at this movie when it was on cable because there's one shot where you can clearly see a highway with traffic in the background. That's my memory, at least.

Keith Feinstein

You could make a new format purely for mediocre movies. Not great, not terrible. mediocrity all the way.

Mak

I have a Sci if mag called Enterprise Incidents from when this came out and there's a big article about this movie in it. I can scan it for you guys if you want it.

Keith Feinstein

Jay got that streak of grey hair goin’ on. 👍🏼

Matthew Gladney

VERRRRRRRRY COOL!!!!

erkembode everywhen

For a minute I was like "Yay, that Robert Urich space movie! I love Robert Urich!" But alas it was not to be. I'd forgotten all about this one. But still yay-ish.

Lisa

YAY
