Half in the Bag: Doctor Sleep and Parasite

Half in the Bag: Doctor Sleep and Parasite

Comments

Not to get political, but (about two weeks after the fact) the president of America has the same sentiments as that red neck guy about Parasite winning best picture. And then Trump says why can’t we “get back” Gone with the Wind and Sunset Boulevard? Movies from 1939 and 1950 respectively. #PicardFacepalm https://youtu.be/njbNp96USrg

Mr. Derek Magnuson

I loved Parasite, and you guys articulated why it works when other films with "obvious" themes don't. In other words, I've been stealing your talking points verbatim to make myself seem smarter. Thanks.

birds of what?

1) Dr. Sleep sounds like a companion piece to 'A Cure for Wellness' 2) Yup. Foreigners and foreign films exist. 72) Won't somebody please think of the Birds of Prey.

Bort Ward

I really enjoy and am surprised by the discussion they're still able to have without spoilers. I'm guessing they might have noticed a significant amount of people who skip past spoiler time stamps in older videos? Spoiler labels are very cool!

hehehe. Even made an appearance on the recent episode of ST:P. To be fair they probably recorded before it aired.

I like RLM, hence being on here. But I do find it very odd their reluctance to just call it racism. The feigned "oh but why?" regarding the nonsense video, attributing it to misplaced anger toward woke culture generally, is too close to playing both-sides. It's just plain old racism and misogyny--not a big mystery.

I wasn't the biggest fan of Doctor Sleep, but it felt great to watch a horror movie in the theaters that took its time and really focused on the characters, especially after watching It: Chapter 2 only 2 months earlier where I was being bombarded by loud noises for 3 hours

Ian Miller

Great episode. I loved Doctor Sleep, and I think I prefer it to The Shining. One thing I’d like to point out is the criticism of director Mike Flanagan’s apparent overlooking (no pun intended) of using extremely wide lenses, the effect of which would be to exactly recreate the expansiveness of the interior of the Overlook as adult Danny walked through it. I might suggest that, whether intended or not, the effect achieved on screen in Doctor Sleep is the invoking of the universal feeling of visiting a place from one’s childhood that once seemed massive, but now as an adult, seems smaller. Just a thought. Love you guys, love Red Letter Media!

Aaron Sarlo

Holy fuck, Joaquin Phoenix's speech edited together with the reactions to Eminem's performance was hilarious. Great to have Half in the Bag back.

I really liked "Obey or Die!" I found myself wondering how they were able to create such realistic violence.

John Radoff

Disappointed Mike didn’t make any Romulan BoP references.

Katy

Here in Germany, it comes out on DVD next week, I think (after a VERY limited theatrical run)... the first best picture winner I actually want to see in god knows how long...

Manuel Johnen

I love the simple, yet effectual imagery of Bird of Prey: "Bird of prey flying high in the summer sky. Bird of prey flying high gently in the sky. Bird of prey flying high, am I going to die? Bird of prey flying high, take me on your flight."

Marvin Falz

Yay, I got a date for valentines day!

Carl Emmoth

God, that redneck dude... thanks, now I have to know that piece of shit exists... :/

Manuel Johnen

This was the first time I listened to the audio of that YouTuber ranting about Parasite as opposed to just scrolling by it on Twitter. That was fucking hysterical.

Lauren R

Really glad you guys didnt give any spoilers for Parasite. First movie in a long time I sat slack jawed for the last hour because I legitimately didnt know what was going to happen. Everyone should see it knowing very little going in. Also! Love when anticipated reviews (Parasite) are paired with something unexpected. I'll have to check out Dr. Sleep!

Kjersti Chippindale

Hey, thanks for talking about Parasite and some of the Oscars criticism about it. It should really be simple: a good movie is a good movie. It doesn't matter the language the film is in. There's so many great films out there if you aren't afraid to read subtitles every once in a while. Asian Cinema in particular: Seven Samurai, Parasite, Battle Royale, Rashomon, Infernal Affairs, Old Boy, Audition, The Ip Man films, Train to Busan, etc. I'm not an expert, but just living here it seems to be a great age right now for Korean cinema.

Thanks, gents. I needed this today.

I'm here for Mike's Hollywood zingers and Jay's gravity-defying hair swoop. Rock on, gentlemen.

Amy Hitchner

OMG, Roberto Benigni, that fuckin' fraud... If I see his overpaid stupid face reading the Bible or Dante's Inferno on italian television one more time I'm gonna kill myself.

Lelio Mulas

You should talk to Mauler about these films.

Michael Gussler

Who are the guys in the Thumbnail? They don't look like Mike and Jay.

Steve

Reviewing two award-winning movies. One received an Oscar. The other received a Razzie.

Steve

Yay! Just in time for me to get off work. You guys are awesome.

Queen Taru

Fuck my job, I'm watching this.

Lelio Mulas
