Throwback: Filming a Matte Painting

Here's a throwback to one of the very first things shot for Space Cop back in 2013. Jim and Colin came down and Jim painted a wonderful matte painting of future Milwaukee. We rigged up the camera set up on a ladder and added some model trees to the foreground to give the shot some depth, as well as ran a smoke machine to give a tiny bit of fog to the shot. Later in post, Colin added ripples to the water and flying cars in the background. A combination of practical and digital effects.

That is so fucking awesome. Movie magic!

Izzy Folsom

It was a real painting.

Red Letter Media

That is fantastic, I love the smoke machine and model trees for added depth.

Wolfman Dan

Is it a digital painting that was printed or is Jim the sort of guy who paints real paintings? Guessing it is digital.

Andreas

Almost like you guys aren't really hack frauds. Or you know some talented Canadians.

Top Hat Monkey

That is really cool

Varun Pramanik

Excellent. More backstage stuff please, even if it's just photos. It's fascinating to see "how the sausage is made" as Jack would say.

Jim and Colin are treasures. How did you guys originally get connected with them?

Nathan Smith

Awesome!

Marvin Falz

People as talented as Jim make me feel tiny, like a little tree on a ladder.

Paul H

That's amazing! I had no idea that was a matte painting. Thank you so much for sharing these kind of photos.

I just moved to MKE a few weeks ago, and I live extemely close to the Veterans Park lagoon, so this image is especially awesome and amusing for me now. And I see that Walker's Point got some sweet Jetsons bubble-on-a-pole-loft condos!

William Sircin

spacecop 2 pls.

Wait, that was a matte painting? Holy shit...

Bill Lehecka

I love how Jim is simply wearing flip flops, next to his matte painting. Kinda like "Yeah, it's Tuesday morning, did an amazing matte painting.... I'm hungry, what's for lunch?"

Annie Desrochers

Pretty damn good for some hack frauds! Feels like I’m looking at some BTS shots from the original SW trilogy!

Ryan Salmon

Love these BTS images and videos. Seeing how the schlock gets made is amazing!

Little Mike

That's pretty awesome

When it comes to the Patreon value for the dollar, you tards are the best... of the worst.

Fancy McShane

Nice!

Andy

That's so cool!
