Not really. There is a pretty big leap from Watchmen to The Boys in terms of plot. Although they are both dark and violent.

Chernobyl is a drama that takes a lot of liberties when it comes to facts, but the series is top notch. Especially when you get to the end and they lay the actual facts in front of you. Russia's hubris almost killed the whole world and you probably didn't even know it. My co-worker is 20 and I asked him if he knew about the Chernobyl incident. He said he didn't learn about it in high school. World poisoning event and no mention of it in modern textbooks. Sad. Anyway, I've recommended the series to everyone I've ever meet, so you should watch it. It didn't get nominated for 19 Emmys for nothing.

Jesus Christ, I loved The Boys. Thanks for recommending it. Thank you SO MUCH for the spoiler warning! The airplane scene is stuff of legend.

Was that for the sake of a viewing audience, one that may not be quite so ready for that level of depravity? I loved the show but of it were more disturbing, especially sexually (which o know some of the comics get super gross) I wouldn't be able to stomach it. Just curious

I'm glad you guys discussed this but I was sad that Rich hadn't read the comic. I'm most interested in how those who read it felt about it's divergence. As one who only saw it, I was thoroughly entertained.

Remember Hancock? Couldnt decide if it was a Disney kids film or dark if super heroes were real film.

I was curious about that. Also, Ennis has a glorious depraved mind. I love him.

I read all the comics in preparation for this and they are WAY more over the top in the dark themes, way better written and have incredibly complex and well realised arcs over huge page counts. The show takes the aesthetics of the characters and nails them, the casting is superb, but the plot and even the characters are only superficially related to the comics. I still liked the show a lot, but the comics were kind of astonishingly well done and I was very surprised just how little of the story was borrowed for the show.

The Boys stars Lucas Hood from Banshee. Banshee which of course is fucking awesome. I will definitely give this a watch.

Yup, I feel the same way. I don't care how it is presented at this point, it's just too much.

To be fair to Zack Snyder, he did do an okay job directing the Watchmen movie and that's the property that the Boys, Kick-Ass and literally EVERY other unconventional and dark superhero story is loosely based on.

Idk anything about the comics, but the Preacher tv show is really fun and definitely has a similar feel to The Boys. Karl Urban and Dominic Cooper look almost identical and I wonder if they had originally tried to cast Karl Urban for Preacher. They're both very good as the respective show leads and its clear Garth Ennis has a type when it comes to protagonists. If you're looking for other good, more serial shows, Legion is probably the best thing on TV.

I like the "true to life" ring to The Boys. I'd say that you'd find the potential for corporate evil everywhere. Maybe corporate America is just more efficient than the rest of the world. Regarding the episode: it's nice to see a different color palette in the set and in the title cards. Tasteful. The set already feels more intimate/private, and the frequent connection with the audience enhances that intimate/private feeling by including the viewer. I know, you frequently look at the camera in all review shows, but the camera angle and the more measured feel (I got) makes a difference. It's also nice to see a sober, less chaotic and wild talk. Not in general, but once in a while.

About "Preacher", hey Rich, watch the damn show! I don't know how true it is to the comics, because I'm a grown-ass man, and I don't read comics, but it is completely insane, in a good way. Oh, and I loved "The Boys". Thanks for youze guyzez takes on it.

I liked The Boys a lot but I actually like Preacher more so far. They're probably right about it being a few years too early, and that it'd be better if it were on Netflix or Amazon. I love how completely over the top and wacky it is though, and I love the three main characters and the actors who play them. It also takes the series in a completely different direction for each season, like a good series should. That's why I'm glad Jay made that crack about Stranger Things. I was hoping/thinking they waited so long between seasons 2-3 because they were actually coming up with new ideas. Obviously not.
