Behind the Scenes - Star Trek Discovery Video
Added 2019-05-26 02:51:04 +0000 UTC
So this is a behind the scenes video of us building the cheap Discovery set.
A little backstory... Rich and I will be doing a discussion on Season 2 of Discovery. In my notes I wanted to talk about the TERRIBLE AND INSANE technobabble. Now I know technobabble is a major part of Star Trek, but it has never been so nonsensical and written by people that think you can suck up a black hole and shoot it at someone. After a run of the worst, most impossibly stupid things being said some character would actually say, "Science, fuck yeah" or "I like science"... it was as if the writers were patting themselves on the back for being so awesome at writing. So, in our discussion I wanted to talk about that. First I wrote some dialog and was planning to read it aloud. Then I thought, well let's shoot a little scene acting it out - like a table read. That turned into actually trying to shoot it like it was on Discovery. Then instead of inserting that into the STD S2 video we decided to make it it's own little video as an ad. So that's that! -Mike
I would really love to see you guys do a shitty sci-fi movie. Oh, wait...

Will you do a review of the Season 2 of The Orville as well? I know you mention The Orville every time you review STD, but it would be nice to have a full review.

I love this so much! Thanks for taking the time to document the BTS action, looking forward to more! Remind Rich to properly ventilate the studio (or wear a filtering mask) when working with spray paint indoors. We can't lose America's working class hero.

Can you guys maybe do a general talk about the state of writing in TV/Movies? I feel like there are a bunch of shows/movies that recently have been criticized heavily for their writing: Discovery, The Last Jedi, Game of Thrones... I don't think "the writing is bad" goes deep enough. Is there a reason why writing is or feels worse now? Like, are studios saving money by hiring less experienced writers? Or are they giving those writers less time and having them work together less? Like some things in discovery felt like each episode was written on it's own, completely ignoring what the previous episode established.
Or is it that shows today are written for an audience that has a very short attention span and so they deliberately write without knowledge of preexisting material. Maybe they think they have to cater to social media by making the shows more about clippable and "oh shit!" moments that will go viral on Twitter, rather than doing the slow character stuff. These are just my ideas but I would like to hear more from people who know how the system works. All I get in most Youtube videos is "writers bad". Would love to hear your take on that general topic.

Jay looking lost and confused at the end just pretty much sums up how one should feel after watching an episode of Discovery

It was great, but needed at least 300% more stupid camera work and Dutch angles.

I don't think Mike ever feels shame about dressing up like a Startrek.
Seriously though, this kind of content is why RLM is so great.

The important thing is that Jay is part of your Star Trek fan made movie and that warms my cold heart.
