The Haunting of Sharon Tate

I think this just came out on VOD and there was a 99% chance it would suck but because I have an interest in the Charles Manson story, I gave it a shot even though I didn't know anything about it beforehand. It is SO BAD. They took this real life horrific murder spree and turned it into a super generic home invasion slasher movie, which comes across tasteless and exploitative. They cast Hilary Duff as Sharon Tate, which is just laughable! There's a really low budget Manson movie from the 90s called simply The Manson Family. It was made by a DIY filmmaker/crazy man named Jim Van Bebber and was a passion project of his. His movie could also be described as tasteless but the difference is that his movie goes all the way with it. It's well aware it's being tasteless and is doing so to have a point of view and make a statement. The Haunting of Sharon Tate is just tone deaf and stupid. Ugh.

Cool, saved me an hour and a half. Thanks Jay!

Derek J. Hunt

They’ll release that crap but they won’t release “Eat Your Makeup.”

River Eirtree

Which reviewer?

Arkwryte

They should have cast Zac Efron as Manson to round out the bad casting.

Twit In A Hat

Thanks for warning! Another reviewer I also enjoy said that the film's existence calls into question our right to consider ourselves a literate, creative, and enlightened society.

Kurt Stallings

Written reviews, we're in uncharted waters here! Thanks for the tip, Jay. Will avoid.

W. Fry

Any thoughts on the trailer for that Ted Bundy movie starring Zach Braff? Seemed pretty tone deaf and sensational to me...

Jack Fate

Oh dear

Youcannotfalter

Yeah! More of this, please!

Top Hat Monkey

Just makes me wanna watch it.

Top Hat Monkey

I'm a fan of these rants. Thanks :)

Ya put "haunting" in the title of anything and my eyes start to roll uncontrollably.

ShishkaBerry

You Bum!

Rob Marland

you made me laugh so hard I really needed that

hamish smith

Thank you sir for the review.

John Webb

Give me more, boo

Ian Richard Kunert

From the trailer it looked like there was barely any attempt to even make things look like the 60's (apart from headbands, a car, and a reel-to-reel player).

Chris Leroux

I just watched South Park's Season 2 Christmas Special, the one where Charlie Manson escapes prison with Cartman's uncle and has a character arc. It's got heart.

There was another Sharon Tate slasher (it's becoming a sub-genre ) a few years back called Wolves at the Door. I remember Mark Kermode being genuinely angry about it. He used words like "tasteless" and "exploitative" in his review as well. I don't understand why these filmmakers tackle such a tragic and sensitive subject matter in such a tone-deaf and dim-witted way.

JP

You should check out The Last Shift. It’s loosely based on the Manson murders and it’s a legitimately scary horror movie.

Melissa Mercer

Thanks, that explains it. I was legitimately trying to figure out the reason for this surge of Manson murder related movies/shows/documentaries over the last year or so.

Wonder if Michael Rapaport liked it?

Rudy

Isn’t this year a big anniversary of the Manson murders? That’s why you’re seeing stuff like this, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, and some other project called “Charlie Says” getting released. I’m not the least surprised that The Haunting of Sharon Tate is in poor taste.

Lauren R

Tarantino's done well with warping real world events in the past. The key is to not be completely generic and also not cast bad actors to play iconic people.

Red Letter Media

It took 12 days to make!

Marc Packenius

There will never be a better Manson docudrama than 1976's "Helter Skelter" with Steve Railsback and George DiCenzo.

Joe Goes Over

Highly recommend the "Charles Manson's Hollywood" series of the You Must Remember This podcast. A great, non-sensationalist analysis of the family's origins on through to the repercussions of the murders. Got me hooked on media about cults, lol.

Hortense the Mule-Faced Girl

I was actually thinking of watching this tonight. Now I'm not. Thanks Jay!

Sarzac

Jay must be really excited about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood then. As for me, I've had enough movies and TV shows based on or loosely associated with the Manson murders for one lifetime.

Off topic but it’s Friday night in the uk and I was just watching Rocky and I never knew he was a horrible violent loan shark enforcer and Paulie was an abusive brother ( he threw the thanksgiving turkey out the back door !) and what happened to the short guy who was a major character in Rocky 1 but never seen again ! Still he wrote it so gets a pass (as Jay said)well done Mr Stallone.

Stefan

At first I assumed they were trying to get in on the Manson interest spike due to "Once upon a Time in Hollywood". But I'm guessing it's more like "Slenderman" stupidity.

Robert Declan Rabun

Cool. Thanks for the heads up man

Dave M

So you only kinda loved it ?

Michael flores

very unrelated but have you seen Retribution? It's from 1987 stars semi familiar faces and Hoyt Axton . Pleasant surprise I found awhile back . cheers!

Kevin Young

I saw that on imdb recently and just laughed. Oh, Hillary Duff.

Kristen

I've only watched Deadbeat at Dawn by Jim

omar silva

This is the first text-only review from RLM that I can recall. Fun.

Percy Gryce

Damn I was gonna watch it tonight, that's my evening ruined

William Powell

I was rewatching the rlm episode where they talk about Zak Bagan’s Demon House when I got this notification. And you all say paranormal shit isn’t real. #mikewasright

Reese

Jay, have you ever heard these Van Bebber voicemails? http://dark7.org/a/jimvanbebber/

Nathan Tipton

Now we're getting secret rants.

Rick Drake

Wow, this YouTube Ad issue has really got Jay in a bad mood today. I love it!

JT V

But are there tiddies

James Bailey

You didn’t need to sign off on this post. We all knew it was you, Jay.
