Here's an older Space Cop  behind the scenes photo we just found. The opening shot of future Milwaukee was a matte painting done on plexi-glass by Jim from Canada, which was layered on top of an actual photo of Milwaukee. You can also see we put some miniature trees out of focus in the foreground to give the shot some depth. Later in post, Colin from Canada added cgi cars flying through the sky as well as water rippling on the lake.

One of the best shots in the movie that doesn't feature Rich Evans

So glad you guys went old school with this.

This is so cool.

That's wonderful :)

Physical matte paintings on glass were a common technique until CGI took over. Jim was the one who really wanted to do an old school matte painting.

Did you come up with this technique? Well done! And how fun!

Very cool; thanks for sharing! Actually, there is a shortage of VFX dudes here in the Vancouver area. I always see postings for high profile jobs at places like ILM Vancouver!

Look at those damned canuks, taking all our good fx jobs

Classic Jim and Colin, wearing sandals and being blurry.

Don't forget about the coffee!

Wait, aren't you supposed to sit in front of that monitor and say "faster and more intense" while counting your money like Lucas?
