I just noticed when the poster for Mad Max pops up, it quickly changes to ROTOR before disappearing.

It's in the same spirit as the original Robocop. Beautiful. It represents what SciFi actually is about. Exploring the possibilities of human development.

I like that we have to debate which is the better of two great movies! Considering one of RLM's signature shows is Best of the Worst, having a discussion of what is the Best of the Best is refreshing!

The original Mad Max is actually my favorite. I love that rather than a full apocalypse; everything is just slowly falling apart. The "Main Force Patrol" is presented as the last vestige of law and order that the government is still able to deploy, and they are grievously underfunded and overworked. The script is sharp and full of quotable dialogue. Max's descent into darkness culminates in that excellent revenge montage at the ending that feels like the action-movie equivalent to the Christening scene in The Godfather.

while Fury Road is nice and slick, Road Warrior is just a more entertaining movie for me. Humungus is also a better villain than Immortan Joe. seriously, name me one iconic scene with him that is not completely carried by visuals alone.
and while you are right that these movies are never about Max, he usually gets to be THE bad ass in more than 2 or 3 scenes. here he barely keeps up and is constantly outdone by "Furiosa", who not only has the most ridiculous name in movie history (she`s not really furious either), but is also forced in this stupid female-hippie back story without any logic ("let`s drive off into the endless desert, why not"). in the end it`s like Rick said, Road Warrior had more grit. Fury Road felt like a video game. the new Doom has very similar problems compared to the decades old original.
