Free OP09 Enel Guide

Introduction

Enel brings a distinct playstyle to the One Piece TCG, excelling in durability and resource efficiency. Its unique ability to sustain Life cards under pressure makes it a resilient leader, ideal for drawn-out battles where endurance is key. By focusing on a control strategy, Enel steadily wears down opponents while maintaining a strong defensive foundation. As the match progresses, it utilizes high-cost characters with game-changing on-play effects, turning the tide by limiting the opponent’s options and capitalizing on their weakened state through the “starve” approach.

This comprehensive guide breaks down Yellow Enel’s strategic depth, covering optimal deck-building choices, matchup analysis, and gameplay techniques. Learning how to transition from early-game defense to late-game dominance is crucial to mastering this leader. Whether you're a veteran player or refining your approach, this guide will help you sharpen your skills and gain a competitive edge.

A Note on Enel's Status as of OP09

Enel’s recent success is primarily attributed to its favorable matchup against Doflamingo, which has allowed it to perform well in specific environments. However, Enel generally struggles in larger tournaments, as experienced players are adept at dealing with its strategies. Over the past few metas, Enel has faced significant challenges against the broader field.

Despite this, its viability has been bolstered by the continued dominance of Doflamingo in the meta. If Enel is up against multiple Doflamingo decks in a given event, it becomes a much stronger option due to the favorable matchup. While the deck still faces weaknesses, it has the potential to high-roll with triggers and god draws, which can significantly increase its success rate and make it a competitive pick in the current meta.

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Enel Deck

Strengths

Powerful Removal Options – Enel’s deck excels at controlling the board with strong removal tools, making it easier to deal with threats efficiently. This allows players to maintain an advantage by keeping opponents in check.

Straightforward Gameplay – The deck follows a clear game plan, making it accessible for players who prefer a more structured and predictable strategy. Its ability to sustain Life cards and apply pressure makes it a reliable choice.

Beginner-Friendly – Enel’s mechanics are relatively easy to grasp, making it a great option for newcomers looking to learn the game while still being competitive. The deck’s defensive nature also helps mitigate early mistakes.

Weaknesses

Lack of Flexibility – The deck follows a rigid playstyle with little room for deviation. This makes it predictable, especially for experienced opponents who know how to counter its strategy.

Dependent on High-Cost Cards – Enel’s effectiveness hinges on drawing its top-end cards at the right time. If these key pieces don’t show up, the deck can struggle to maintain control or close out games efficiently.

Vulnerable to Skilled Opponents – Because the deck operates in a linear fashion, experienced players can exploit its weaknesses by disrupting key plays and forcing unfavorable trades, making it difficult to recover.

Decklists

In this section, we’ll explore different decklist options for Enel, focusing on builds that optimize both defensive stability and late-game power. Each variation offers unique strengths, allowing you to refine your strategy based on specific matchups. Adjusting your deck composition can enhance your ability to control the pace of the game, ensuring you can withstand early aggression and transition smoothly into your win conditions.

As the meta shifts, adaptability is key. Fine-tuning your deck to counter emerging threats will help maintain Enel’s effectiveness in competitive play. Below, we’ve provided sample decklists that have demonstrated success, serving as a strong foundation for further refinement as the game evolves.

This decklist provides a well-rounded strategy, balancing powerful late-game finishers with reliable early-game removal. Cards like Nami and Gedatsu help establish board control early, setting up Enel’s transition into its stronger plays.

Many Enel builds feature flexible slots, often occupied by the 5-cost Shirahoshi, which can be replaced with additional 2K counters or utility event cards like Dereshi!! based on personal preference and matchup needs. Alternatively, O-Nami is another viable option, offering the ability to KO a 5-cost unit with its trigger effect for added defensive utility.

This decklist keeps a full set of high-cost characters like Katakuri, Yamato, and Ace while adjusting the ratios of other cards to create space for additional options like Lucy and O-Nami. These changes provide more flexibility in gameplay, allowing for different approaches to controlling the board and responding to various matchups.

Starting Turn

In most matchups, choosing to go second is generally the optimal play. This approach allows for a smoother execution of your curve, enabling better early-game tempo and resource management. While specific matchups may require adjustments—covered in detail in the Matchup Section—going second typically provides more flexibility in setting up your key plays and maintaining control throughout the game.

Starving Strategy

This curve provides a general guide, but it's important to remember that we don't always draw the ideal cards at the perfect time. As such, adaptability is crucial. In this strategy, the focus is on starving the opponent of resources, a core principle to fully leveraging Enel’s strengths.

By not attacking the opponent’s Life early, we create a situation where our removal cards, such as Gedatsu and Yamato, gain exceptional value. These characters can KO high-cost threats that would typically be out of reach if the opponent’s Life was lower. Additionally, starving the opponent plays into our defensive strengths—by limiting their resources, we prevent them from finding answers to our plays, allowing us to stabilize the game.

As the match progresses into the late-game, we’ll have a board full of high-power attackers, making it difficult for the opponent to respond effectively. This strategy creates a tall and wide presence that can overwhelm threats and close out the game, while our opponents struggle to mount a defense due to their resource scarcity. Starving them early ensures that counterplays become increasingly difficult, further solidifying our control of the match.

Important Strategies and Habits to Adopt

Efficient Attacking Order

Always prioritize attacking with characters that are already on the board before playing new ones when swinging at life. This strategy minimizes the risk of your newly played units being removed by trigger effects. For example, against Blackbeard, attacking first with established characters prevents your newly summoned units from falling victim to removal cards like Liberation or Finger Pistol. This approach allows you to maintain a stronger board presence while reducing the chances of wasting resources on units that could be easily eliminated.

Optimizing Value

Before playing a KO card, it’s often beneficial to attack an opponent’s character with your leader first (we try to minimize the board being tapped as often as possible, since opponents will focus on attacking our board as well to counter our starving strategy). If the opponent counters the leader swing, follow up by playing the KO card. This sequence allows you to extract additional value, as you’ve effectively made the opponent use their counters earlier, while still getting the desired effect from your KO card. Recognizing these moments is what separates average Enel players from exceptional ones. By maximizing your resources and optimizing your plays, you can gain significant advantages in both tempo and resource management.

Tracking Defensive Output

Enel can struggle against wide boards, so it’s crucial to keep track of your counter power and defensive options, including the potential for healing on the following turn. Sometimes, you may need to counter out early, allowing you to maintain 1 Life, which can then be healed more efficiently in the subsequent turn. Understanding when to make these sacrifices is key to preserving your stability and setting up for a stronger late-game. By managing your defensive output proactively, you can better weather the storm of aggressive decks and build towards your late-game control strategy.
