Hello, friends! I am here once more with a fresh round of S&F Extra. This was actually meant to go up a few days ago, but I got a little delayed... so you'll be getting a double-dose of Extra this month!
More Marker Artwork
First off, I've got another batch of freshly marker-coloured artwork. This time around, we've got Jak and Daxter (from the PS2 game series)...
...Globox and the teensies from the Rayman series...

...and San and Moro from Princess Mononoke!

My friend Matt asked me if I ever found it nerve-wracking to add marker colours to these existing original black-and-white drawings. "What if you make a mistake?!?" I honestly never thought about that until he said it. Don't put doubts in my head, Matt!!! But in seriousness, I think just because I do so many marker pieces for conventions, I feel pretty comfortable with this process.
(Matt, if I may namedrop heavily, is himself a professional artist and the creator of Amphibia. Which makes it all the funnier to me that he thinks this would be scary. I think working for Disney is probably like 10000% more frightening than colouring with markers.)
Fetch Quest Pin
I decided my little adventurer dog deserves his own enamel pin, so I had some made! Here are the mock-ups from the pin company:
Since there was no extra cost associated with making some colour variants, I also had them make a batch of green tunic versions. My plan is to keep the green version as a con exclusive, because people at cons just seem to get really excited about exclusive things. (But if any patrons really want to buy one online, I'm sure I can provide a way to do so.)
For the backing cards, I used the design for my "title page" illustration that I posted on here a few months ago. Here's a mockup of that!
The art of the corgi is still on the card, underneath the pin. This is something that won't look too weird in real life, but looks slightly odd in a flat mockup. But I think people will think it's cute that he's under there, and maybe it will give people a reason to keep the card!
Beaver
This fellow is part of the extended cast of Bunsen the science dog. I drew a portrait of him for them late last year, and I don't think I ever posted it here, so I thought I'd share. I had fun with this guy! Unlike the dogs, there wasn't really a real-life reference for him, so I just got to make up a beaver character in my style.
I forget whose idea the wooden mug is, but I think it's a nice touch.
New Signage
As some of you will know, I usually have a giant corgi cutout sticking out the top of my booth display at conventions. I realized this year that my drawing of him was getting a little old, so I decided to update it, much like how I updated the Dress for the Job shirt. Here's a pic of the new artwork:
And here's a photo of the old version to compare:
It's interesting to me to reflect on the ways Baker's design has changed over the years. When I first created Baker, I didn't actually own a corgi myself... I only got Dipper a little while later! So some of the changes -- mainly the more rounded ears and the longer snout -- just come from spending more time thinking about what corgis actually look like.
The other big change, and probably the most noticible one, is the eyes. At some point, I just really turned on perfectly round, beady animal eyes. It's not really how I have ever drawn eyes on any of my other characters! I think it probably comes from Pikachu, but these days, it mainly makes me think of Funko Pops. Oval eyes just feel more "warm" to me. (I don't think I'd ever update the Vote Dog shirt, though... that's a case where I think the slightly vacant look of the beady eyes really works with the joke.)
Year of the Snake
Last but not least, it's been a while since I posted a SFW version of a Saucy Hippo pin-up, so here's a cute one I drew of Ruby and Jess (technically) to celebrate the year of the snake:
Ruby's hair just keeps getting bigger and bigger every time I draw her. (This tends to happen with a lot of my characters, haha!)
That's all for our belated February Extra! You can look forward to another one later this month... and plenty of other things posted in between. Woo!
