Sam & Fuzzy Extra - December 2024

Hello friends! Here's a fresh S&F Extra for you all for December -- later than usual, but full of goodies.

Christmas 2024 Artwork
I've included a timelapse of the making of this year's piece! You'll find a GIF in the gallery above, or a full video attached at the bottom of the post. This is an interesting one, because I "painted" the full tree background first, before drawing in all the decorations in my more traditional lineart style. You'll notice that Alicia was actually originally Jess... I decided to change her part way through, since Alicia starred in one of this year's Saucy Hippo comic stories. (New pages of that are on the way, incidentally!)

Marker Fanart
I got to do marker colouring for a few of the original art pieces that sold in my art sale earlier this year. This Daisy/Kirby golf piece was interesting, because it had a background! I decided to stylize the colouring for the distant BG a bit by using hatching patterns instead of normal fills.

 

Up next is Rex (from Toy Story) and Grimlock (from Transformers). I actually own this Grimlock toy, so I was able to reference the colours from real life. It even accurately captures my personal decal placement, which I'm sure was probably not totally correct, haha!



I also got to colour up Alucard... my Castlevania rep for my platformer mascot art series. There are a couple different interpretations for how to handle the colours on this design... I went with the one that skews more golden.




Original Character Commissions
The pair of pieces below was drawn for one of my Gen Con regulars. I would up missing most of that con this year due to illness, so I did these pieces for them later by mail. I had a bit of visual reference for the bird lady, which was helpful, since she has such an unusual look!

 

 
It has been zero days since the last ginger mauling
This piece is the latest that I've drawn for Bunsen the science dog and co. Bernoulli (the Burmese Mountain Dog puppy) had a bit of a bad habit of harassing Ginger the cat in his younger days, and this whiteboard was a running joke. (Fortunately, Bernoulli seems to have grown out of it!)

 Marker Pin-ups
Last but not least, here's a pair of safe-for-work pin-ups that also got marker colours as a result of my art sale! This first one is from this year's Halloween comics, when Ruby created a Steamboat-Willie-themed act:



And this second one is the original artwork of Hazel that I used for my Valentines Playing Card series:

  

A rare Hazel pin-up appearance! But I'm quite fond of this one.

It continues to be a bizarre and sometimes difficult time over here, but we are finding ways to get through it. Some of our family was able to come to us and visit for the holidays, which was lovely. Everyone is being so kind to us.
