When I was 10, I was sitting in an armchair in the back of our house. There was a tall lamp right next to the armchair. There was a thunderstorm outside, and suddenly, there was a loud crack near the front of the house, and almost instantly, the lamp flared and sparked out, and I got a strong shock jumping from the lamp. I went to the front of the house, and a tall plant we had growing there was split in two from lightning, and was smoking. I told my dad, who was an electrical engineer, and he said we should throw out the lamp, just to be sure it hadn't taken damage. Out of caution, he also replaced the electrical socket the lamp had been connected to. I can't remember if power to the house went out, or if we had to reset the circuit breakers. I was too concentrated on the tingling in my left arm, which went on for a couple of days.
