Because you guys had the closed captions on, it must have caused the subtitles to be removed when Wayne and Cassandra were speaking Cantonese to each other. They had an entire conversation about Stacy being insecure and needy. The joke that you missed was his last short sentence in Cantonese translated to a very long statement in English, so they had to pause and wait while the subtitles played out 😆. They expand on the gag in the sequel so maybe go without the closed captions, at least for the first act where the scene takes place 😉…Don’t worry, though, I got you guys, lol: Wayne: You look pretty. Cassandra: And you are a handsome man. Wayne: Slowly, I’m learning. Cassandra: I can’t get over it, you’re learning Cantonese. Even your accent is good. (Wayne nods, Stacy shows up) Cassandra: Who is that? Wayne: My ex-girlfriend. Cassandra: She has very nice legs. But no self esteem. Wayne: The irony is, I feel partly responsible for her self-nullifying behavior. Cassandra: You’re allowing yourself to be victimized. Perhaps you haven’t been effectively assertive. Wayne: (short Cantonese sentence) I’ve made a confident declaration in defense of my rights …but it does not seem to do any good. If I help her out of feelings of obligation, I may find myself resenting her. Besides, she’s a psycho hose beast. Cassandra: That is very funny. But labeling people can be dangerous. Wayne: Was it Kierkegaard or Dick Van Patten who said, “If you label me, you negate me”? (And to answer your question…Mike Myers is actually fluent in Cantonese, but was also ad-libbing a lot of his dialogue, so Tia Carrere had trouble understanding him because his accent was awkward when doing so, lol 😉☺️)
