This is what I was talking about. It tugged at me seeing Vanessa stressed and burned out at first. Now seeing her so *sad* that they've been so happy and now someone she loves is hurting and she doesn't know why or how to fix it...that hits hard. And the dialogue hits harder. His slip of going back to her old name, she can tell something's wrong and can't get him to tell her, he hates that he can't talk to her even though she's not calling him out but she's just worried about him, and she can tell he's not just hiding something that she wants to help him with but she can also tell he's lying to her...ouch. I know not everyone agrees with me that I like this unexpected turn the story has taken, but I think it shows that Gamma can mix drama with the super-warm-fuzzy sexiness. And so far, I love it. It makes me care even more about the characters and want to see these two be a team overcoming this challenge and, hard though it is now, be better and closer for it. (They'd sure better be...) That last line, about protecting her smile...Rookie was already pretty lovable, but now he's a ****ing hero. Hopefully he'll be the first partner to get a nickname upgrade to that.

I doubt it would happen, but rookie better not do anything stupid (like cheat). Even if it would cost Rookie and Vanny their jobs, they would still have each other. But considering this is Gamma we're talking about, I'm sure we'll get a wholesome ending. There might be some speed bumps along the way, that's all.
