CULTURAL MARXISM HALLOWEEN SPECIAL: Donnie Darko (2001)

The PG crew tackles a classic Halloween movie that captured our hearts and bent our minds when we were in high school: Donnie Darko (2001). In writer/director Richard Kelly's coming-of-age sci-fi thriller, troubled teen Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal) must decipher the apocalyptic visions he's been having before it's too late. We discuss the film's political backdrop of '80s/'00s conservatism, the primary plot and whether or not it makes sense, and its enduring relevance, dropping a Marx quote or two along the way. Have a spooky Halloween!

In regard to 'mummy issues'. I guess this is an outgrowth of Freud's electra/oedipus rap? Predictive History youtube lecture had an interesting take on this. He says that Freud basically made his name listening to women who had been abused as children, but this freaked out his society (and maybe him) too much, so he had to retread his steps and come up with this whole deal where actually kids subconsciously are attracted to their opposite gendered parents. Which is really gross, but yeah, the Nineteenth/early twentieth century!

I literally was the "there's guys who tried to be Donny Darko"-guy, back in the days. Also had a huge crush on Gretchen and have watched Donnie Darko at least 10 times, by now. It is a really good movie, especially with a teenage brain. My god.
