Weird question
Added 2023-11-09 23:29:13 +0000 UTCI was talking with some of my author friends and we were having a debate. I told them I would ask all of you since I always have gotten solid feedback.
2 questions: how much do you have to love a story to talk about it somewhere? Reddit/forums/discord/etc. at what point can you not keep from sharing your love? (Haha yes. Part of question 1.)
Question 2 - are you more likely to be vocal or the story you love or hate?
Ty tor those who respond!
Comments
I am most vocal about stories I hate/I feel disappointed by. Usually stories have an interesting starting point/concept, but the execution is lacking (often because the characters fail to act realistically or coherently). I share my favourite stories with friends, but not really on forums !

2023-11-16 10:25:32 +0000 UTCI normally only comment if there is an annoying grammar/spelling mistake, if I am confused about a plot point or if I really really enjoyed the story. If it is decent with little errors then I wouldn't comment.

2023-11-10 09:19:07 +0000 UTCI have a short attention/memory span... so the story and how quickly it draws me in, how long it keeps me engaged, how well it develops characters and plot through the reader's immersion in the story, if it handles tropes or common themes creatively, with believable time flow... if it does that with delicious imagery as well, and leaves me hungry for more, I'll tell others to go read it, and leave a review myself. On the opposite end, if the story is dry and hard to get into, or throws the reader into the deep end of politics and you need a spreadsheet to keep track of whose enemy is where and why and who's married or dying, etc... no, I need to be involved in the story before all that. In a character. Invested. Further, if the character is too perfect or too unbelievable, or villains just too over the top obvious and angry for no reason, and the worst of all, for me: insta-love between very unsuitable characters that the reader must force themselves to support. Any of that, along with bad grammar, rapid, run-on sentences, verb tense switching, spelling mistakes, words used in the wrong context, or anything else that pulls a reader out of the state of immersive reading experience, will get me to tell people to try again after the author has gotten the story more workable. I'm sure others have different points where they draw the line or go all in, those are just mine.

2023-11-10 06:29:34 +0000 UTCIt depends on the people I'm around, folks that like reading its a no brainer to talk about new found authors. It all comes down to the book, if it great or I hate it, I'll be vocal talking about it with the above mentioned group of friends.

2023-11-10 01:09:25 +0000 UTChonestly, it depends on the setting and company if i mention a story i like... (in fact i mentioned RotlDr to 2 friends i tend to comiserate from time to time about the lack of good dragon stories) as for 2) i tend to leave remarks in the comment section occasionally both on stories i like and those i dont like. unsubbing and marking as not interested on RR usually follows if i have major beef with how a story goes. i tendd to not say anything much (or just wish the authorr good luck with the story before /out ) if i discover the story might be good, but just not for me. like with ultimate level 1. your writing is good, but somehow the story doesn't work for me, so i just stopped and instead focus on RotlDR ;p

2023-11-10 01:03:17 +0000 UTCSorry to say, to talk about a book, it would take something at the level of that time I first read LOTR when I was twelve. I was NOT a popular dude that month. But if I hate it, I'll just tag it "not interested" and move on. I guess, if it starts out well but then turns into an absolute turd sandwich, I could speak out/drop a bad review, if only to save people from the disappointment.

2023-11-10 00:45:25 +0000 UTCAll depends. If I feel it going off the rails at the beginning I will just walk away. I read that battleforged story and even the Patreon chapters but it got so bad I made some comments and left.

2023-11-10 00:04:56 +0000 UTCTo be honest, it depends on how much I love a story to actually talk about it. And I prefer to be vocal on the positive side of stories I love. Those that I dont may not be my cup of tea, which could be someone else's, so I let people make up their own minds on them.

2023-11-09 23:50:37 +0000 UTCHow many chapters you give before deciding it goes off rails to much? Haha good stuff!

2023-11-09 23:41:56 +0000 UTCCommenting on stories I like a lot is most what I would do. Most likely to comment on stories I like. Will comment on one I read a lot but turned out to go off the rails

2023-11-09 23:40:28 +0000 UTCWow thats some crazy stuff for a first chapter or even a story. Yeah got a few friends who always feel the pain. We talk about what people say in comments but sometimes its just .5 and nothing

2023-11-09 23:39:22 +0000 UTCI'm more likely to talk about a story I love but most people are more vocal about bad experiences. I tend not to bad mouth a story rather refer to issues within a story without mentioning a name. This doesn't mean I won't give poor reviews when I believe they are warranted. That said I have only given a 1 star review on RR once and that was because of a first chapter that had both pedo and incest content I shit you not. Reported them too.
