There are many structural elements to a good illustration that need to be taken care of up front. Here I start laying in some basic forms over my thumbnail as a search for the answers. Regarding her gesture I try to follow a curved line of action to make the seated pose more dynamic and make sure to point the planes of her body in different directions. Compositionally I try out different placements for limbs and objects. What is the best way for her to hold her crop so that it balances the image and doesn't obscure any important body parts? I'm also considering the perspective. What areas need to be foreshortened and how will the perspective play a role in the view of the figure. The above drawings look deceptively simple, but this is where a lot of shit gets figured out. I'm not satisfied with the placement of her leg for example, and I will need to solve a few more problems before I can move on to the details.
