Midnight WiP 01

Let's try something a little different this time... Rather than to wait and release my steps files after the upcoming illustration I'll be posting them here as I complete them instead. I'll still make a zip file at the end, but doing it this way could be a little more interesting.

So here's a couple of quick thumbnails for my illustration of Midnight. I had to get over my fear of sharing these stupid things because they’re literally just scribbles no one was ever intended to see. I do not waste time on details or fixing mistakes yet. This is my time to explore ideas. What do I envision in my head? What will my idea look like if I draw it down? The thumbnails give me a preview and a sense of what direction to go in. What works and what doesn't. Sometimes I only need to do a few of these, sometimes I do dozens.

Here I have an idea in mind. I picture Midnight sitting on a stool or a throne in the middle of her sex dungeon (because OF COURSE she has a sex dungeon). She is waiting for you to obey while firmly grasping her leather crop.

In the left column I work on her gesture. What is her body attitude and how should I convey it? In the larger thumbnail on the bottom right I try changing the camera angle to a lower view, which works well for a dominatrix scene since it suggests we are below her and makes her feel a little more imposing. In this type of scene the viewer becomes a participant and if done correctly can can leave more of an impact on them... but there are challenges.

Sometimes I'll create a whole page of these little thumbnails and just consider my options. This time I think the thumbnail in the bottom right is enough to work with... and if it isn't, I'll go back to the drawing board... but I've found that almost any idea can work... as long as you're willing to tackle the challenges it presents.
