The person was viewing an imagined slight as being inconsiderate. People's self-imposed role of "parking space guards" is phenomenal. My mother-in-law has been confronted numerous times by people who aren't doctors. They demand to see the blue badge (UK's version of a disabled parking pass) as she struggles to get out of the car (with her cane, or sometimes with my father-in-laws help into a wheelchair) and say they don't see why she has a blue badge. Like, WTF? You're not a doctor. There is a legit problem with people illegally parking in disabled spaces, especially in the US. (Here in the UK many people will avoid them, then park illegally somewhere else. The cars that you do see parked illegally in disabled spaces are often high-end cars that most people can't afford. I guess when you pay £100K+ for a car, you get to park anywhere and ignore the driving laws. But that's a different topic.)

Living in the UK, space is even tighter than the US. I live in a cul-de-sac that has enough room for one car as long as everyone parks partly on the sidewalk. Not everyone does. It's frustrating, but it does teach patients. (Although, one person left his car running, door wide open for 10 minutes. I almost moved it for him. I was going to park it a ways away, but he came out just in time.) My wife uses a disability badge as well, so I sympathize completely. The hospital is the most difficult place to find a disabled spot, but at least we don't have to pay for parking. Some spaces are actually marked reserved for vans.

This info is good to know. I would not have made her wait longer than a minute. The odd thing is that she had plenty of space to park and her disabled husband got out of the car from the passenger seat with no problem.

I am a person who uses an electric scooter. I had a van that had a ramp on the side of the car. Most handicapped spaces don’t have enough room for the ramp (electric and comes out with a remote) with still giving me enough room to circle around and get to the front of the ramp so I can enter the car. I will often have to search forever and accept a space very far away. I had doctor appointments at a local hospital often. The only spot I could access was next to a non-handicapped space. I have returned to my car and had to wait for as long as an hour since someone has parked in that next space just slightly over the line in that extra striped space. So I couldn’t get access to my car until they returned. Look, you didn’t do that. But, Steve is right, parking is the bane of my existence. And after sitting in a parking lot waiting, I’m annoyed. And, please understand, that every time that happens, the poor soul who meant no harm needs to hear a lecture from me. I do try to be pleasant because I know they didn’t mean to inconvenience me, but I want them to feel sorry so they don’t do it again. BtW there is a huge sticker on on the side of the van that says I need at least Six feet to enter.
