Added 2023-08-01 19:53:12 +0000 UTC
Hey guys! Are you considering getting solar panels? Check out this conversation Steve and I had. We go over everything you need to know.
Are you enjoying this patron content? Let me know.
Have a great week!

Extremely grateful for this content and all you do! Just to give you an additional data point - as someone with limited free time, I do most of my media consumption during commutes, and that basically means audio / podcast app. The only way I'm keeping on top of your Friday live streams (which I love!!) is because you're kindly publishing them in audio form on the stream. So, +1 to the request to please add this content there as well!

We’ve had a 4kw system on our roofs in Montana since 2015. We’re very happy with making 60-75% of our electric demand. However my calculations show we’ve only paid off ~60% of our install costs so far (even with about 40% of the install covered by grants and state and federal rebates). Just saying, don’t expect immediate returns.

Is it an issue for those with more resources to pay for content to be shared with the less privileged? Perhaps we should just let the charlatans and liars teach the bungled and botched?

We decided not to put them in the podcast stream because these are not SGU episodes. We also think video is more the norm today.

We decided at the beginning of this year that we are going to make videos specifically for our patrons. That's where the SGU Q&A came from. You get early access to the content. I think it would be a waste to not let non-patrons eventually see these videos.

IMHO the most important advice was to check the state laws and the reputation of the company. We have had our solar panels for three years now. And being in very sunny Las Vegas, it has been wonderful. We bought from a local company with excellent references online. And we didn't bother with the battery since our local company said it was not needed in a state where we have bright sun almost every day.

Right now, in Texas with temps hanging around 40C, the efficiency of solar panels drops between 4.5-7.5%. Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere....

I enjoy the content, but I don't know if these need to be videos. Would it be possible to put them in the podcast stream?

yes sir, really enjoying the patreon only content. I've been looking into solar for some time and this is a nice overview 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Enphase makes the IQ8 micro-inverters that [with some additional equipment] can form a micro-grid so that if there's a power outage they automatically disconnect from the grid and continue supplying electricity to the house so long as the sun is shining on the panels to produce electricity. Can be a nice option for some.

If you're buying your panels and looking for the federal 30% rebate, remember, it's for the solar SYSTEM, and your roof is part of that SYSTEM. Had I known that, I could have gotten my roof replaced basically for free with the purchase of a solar system for my house.
Instead I'm part of a solar garden, which works a lot like the buy-electricity-from-your-roof-top-panels setup that Steve has.

Is it really patron content if anyone subscribed to your youtube channel will be notified of it and can watch it ?
You're going to need a bigger prison

We've been thinking about rooftop solar for our home. This was great info.
