I'm also currently working through The Scout Mindset. I consider it one of the fundamental books, along with The Skeptics Guide to the Universe, that everyone must read and recommend them every chance I get.

Is it not possible for a disabled person to say ableist things, like saying a situation they dislike is “lame”? How about the R-word or variants being used to attack someone who isn’t cognitively impaired, but the repetition of those terms will get back to those who would be hurt? Can someone older than 50, 60, or 70 still say ageist things? What makes it different for picking on a different trait? Irish people have been targets of ethnic discrimination for a long time, and phrases like “redheaded stepchild” perpetuate it. Even if the person using “ginger” as a slur is of European descent, what else is it but racism? There are different degrees of negative experience from bigotry, but how are we determining where the line should be drawn?

Great interview!!

I remember only one time my parents "interfered" in my life as a result of protection. I was offered a graduate school fellowship pending receipt of my grades for my senior year at college. The registrar would not release the grades for 3 months which would have eliminated the offer (it was June and they wanted me for the summer field season). My father had a relationship with the University president and was able to get the grades the next day. One case where "protection" was to my advantage.

I live just north of Tampa, and it hasn't rained in so long that everything is turning brown and dying.

Hey everyone, is there a place where all the words from the "What's the Word" segments are kept that's easy to look up? If not, would you like someone to do that? (I offer that hoping there's already transcripts of each episode 😊) In the mean time, what was the word for "I saw it with my own eyes!" or "I heard it with my own ears!"?
