The solution to tailgating is to leave a larger gap in front of you. Trying to place yourself evenly between two cars will result in you being pushed forward until you are tailgating at the same distance as the driver behind. By putting more distance in front, you give yourself more breaking time, even in an emergency. This allows the tailgater time to break without rear-ending you. You may not be the cause of an accident, but it's still not an enjoyable experience to deal with.
