In an ICF reactor the laser would fire 5-20x a second, that's ~500 million fusion pellets a year. The real problem that no one seems to address is their cost. The Hohlraum fusion pellets are incredible feats of engineering. You would have to mass produce them for a cost significantly less then the cost to produce ~18MJ of electrical energy some other way. Hohlraum pellets currently manufactured from gold, they are investigating lead as a lower cost alternative but personally I can't see an ICF fusion plant making sense financially.

2021-08-30 14:12:42 +0000 UTCYou are implying that we are near having a self sustaining fusion reaction... How can that be done if it requires the lasers to build the high pressure containment environment... Without the lasers, I think that it would quickly lose coherence and flame off.
