A lot of people are saying that the Haldol can cause psychosis is that likely? What’s the difference between delusions and psychosis? Can a person cause themselves to believe they did something they didn’t without being in or having been in psychosis? What causes that? These are questions I have post this case. Can he for instance start to believe he might be guilty without actually having been guilty, would that be psychosis or what could that be caused by? Can major depressive disorder cause any of that. Could he have been receiving pressure from inmates that influenced his mind rather than law enforcement? Thanks Lauren for asking a bunch of these questions for me. This is why HTC is so good. I do wonder though if Dr John can address whether he feels working in a system where he sees the worst of humanity regularly colours his view of people’s motives generally especially those accused of crimes. As a person diagnosed with moderate bi polar 2 disorder, this fascinates me. (Bi polar spectrum disorder in Aus) I find its key to have good connections and a world/lifestyle that doesn’t reinforce the depression state, I worry that if I was put in his position my illness might win so I’m trying to understand what happened here.

I think John is on the money - that there is a wounded / empathetic part of defence advocates that feel unfairly treated / railroaded / like the little guy - and suddenly there is a community / audience supporting a little guy, and they feel like they can gain some empowerment for themselves from joining the rabid defender echo-chamber. They can’t be swayed because it’s actually personal, trying to right a perceived wrong done to them in the defence of another!

I do believe the jury got it right, but the defense really stirred the pot and then Gull's rules just set the stage for this storm. Ngl I think the political climate added to the mix too. My heart really goes out to Lauren and Dr John. I was reading the chats in your live today (guilty verdict) and some people have gotten really out of control and completely unprofessional. They’re simply forgetting what Lauren puts herself through FOR US by going to trial each and every day and reporting what we would have never gotten without her. There’s so many other YouTubers (lawyers etc) that I feel have a ton of bias in thinking he is innocent from the start. My point is, I can tell Lauren really, really tried to stay neutral & also, I feel she felt afraid to share how she was feeling in real time all because people would get so upset which is so not fair! SHE was there! I’ve been following Lauren & Dr John since the very beginning and I trust her heart implicitly and really dislike how people feel so entitled to get so enraged over people who disagree or have differing opinions or thoughts. I just started this case. I am behind. Lauren you are fabulous and I love Dr. John’s take/explanations as a psychologist. After Dr. John read the ridiculous email and he started giggling, I LOL very much. The writer of the email reminded me of “Wade’s Wives” I have no idea how I ended up on “Phone Calls From Prison’s” YT and “Jumpsuit Pablo’s” YT. The recorded phone calls of Wade Wilson are 🤯 Blows my mind that there are so many females and a male that are in love with the monster. Wade confessed the murders to his biological father and ex-girlfriend. Yet there are a slew of disturbing women that believe they are going to marry Wade and believe all of his lies.

I watch Lawyer Lee and LawyerYouKnow. They are both very ethical and it is interesting to watch with a legal emphasis because they explain the legal processes and reasoning. I can love many children and YouTube channels. I love HTC because of their ethics. Lauren seems very empathic which is similar to me, and Dr. J provides well studied psychological insight which not only gives me insight to the criminal mind, but puts into perspective the behaviors of the human race.

The idea that RA’s confessions related to his dependent personality disorder is an interesting consideration. People without training/experience in personality disorders ie. lawtubers might not not realise and fully weigh this in their assessment of guilt For me I still wonder about the parts of scene that were staged - not sure how that would fit with RA’s impulsive decision

Here is a question and I didn't want to post it publicly. Why didn't the prosecution ask the witnesses to point to the person they believe was bridge guy when they were on the stand? Yes he looks different today but it would have been a nice touch for the jury.

Sitting outside the courtroom for hours, taking tiny breaks throughout the day and then going live every night recapping everything is an incredible undertaking. Regarding the polarization issue, additionally to what Dr. John said I believe that his diagnosis makes some people infantalize him. Couple that with his "solitary confinement" and his wife and mothers' unwavering support, and you get this picture. People love a man who needs saving.

Do the "innocent" camp believe that he was given truth serum or something? That sounds so silly when I type it out. Do they suspect his medicine was tampered with? Lauren and Dr. John, I’m sorry that you have been getting hateful messages and e-mail. That should never happen. I was angry today because of the combination of poor police work, lack of evidence, the fact that Richard Allen was treated differently than other suspects. He was placed in a prison setting when he was an Innocent “Until Proven Guilty inmate”. I just can’t imagine how he was able to do this crime alone. I respect and like you both very much. None of the horrible police work has nothing to do with you at all. I had decided that whatever Dr. John said about Allen’s feigning and malingering and bad acting, I would accept. I have accepted it. However, I haven’t changed my mind about how I would vote if I was on the jury. I would vote Not Guilty. There is simply no evidence. I guess I’m really grateful I’m not on the jury! I’m looking at the situation from February, 2017 on, not 2022 on. Normally I take the side of law enforcement. When a good police force does their job properly and the trial is fair, I’m 100% on their side. So much about this trial was secretive and unfair. I’ve never heard of or seen anything like it! Judge Gull should never be allowed to preside over another trial, ever again. She needs to retire. Again, none of this is your fault. I don’t understand people anymore. Why have so many people become so hateful? I’ve allowed myself to get too wrapped up in this case, so I’m stopping all of it. It’s not that interesting anymore. I feel horrible for Abby and Libby’s families. I can’t begin to imagine what this has done to their lives. It must be almost impossible to bear. Mostly, I do want justice for Abby and Libby. They were brutalized, terrified and violently murdered. They are the victims here. Not Richard Allen. I just don’t want some monster walking around out there free to do it again to some other little girls. That is my biggest fear, because I don’t believe Richard Allen could have done this crime alone. Anyway, I give up. He’s guilty because he confessed and didn’t name anyone else. He’ll have to learn to live with his fate. Best of everything to you both, Lauren and Dr. John. Maybe I’ll check in once in a while. 💚🧡✌️👋 P.S. I do have a few questions. 1. I can’t even begin to say how highly I regard Lauren’s coverage of this case & how much I appreciate her factual reporting. I had to stop listening to all other channels because it felt soul destroying to hear people pushing the narrative of Allen’s innocence & leaving out any information from court which would go against their narrative! I also greatly admire your tenacity with YT! I have thick skin, but I’ve barely spoken about the case on my YT channel because of the hatred! I wanted to let you two know that I was listening to Lawyer Lee talk to Jumpsuit Pablo a few days ago. The exchange was worth the listen and yes, I can love two YouTube channels at the same time. Pablo spent 10 years in prison and at some point 45 days in a "one man cell." He said from his experience you can't describe a coherent confession during a psychotic episode.

I remember Brian from Elizabeth Smart’s Case. Since I live in Utah. I still remember that the day they found her. I’d just come out of Brain Surgery. And I was just brought to my room. I the nurse had the tv on. I had a pain pump. So I had the button in my hand. And I practically yelled, “That Son of a Bitch is going to fake he’s CRAZY!” And my Mother is trying to hush me! And all the Nurses are like, “It’s okay, she’s on drugs.” Then made me laugh, because I was an employee of the Hospital, and my Mom was embarrassed because they knew I was LDS, 😂 But I said, “Oh No! I AM FULLY ALERT! 💯! The Bastard did it, and he’ll get away with it, because he’s going to fake CRAZY!”

Because they and their families, their community—they are all so in need and deserving of this Justice, I’m really horrified by the bungled investigation and abuses of power at play here. If RA is really guilty but the jury decides that the state has not proved their case being a reasonable doubt, blame goes to the investigators, the ISP, the prosecution, Gull, etc. 100%

Hi Lauren! New member here. I remember you saying you discussed in a Patreon episode why you decided to cover the Delphi case, but I can’t remember which episode it is. Could you tell me which one it is? I’ve been following this case since day one. I’m just curious why you wanted to cover it besides obvious reasons. Thank you! Thoroughly loving your and Dr. John’s work! I’ve been a true crime enthusiast for years and years, and I love hearing Dr. John’s perspective from a criminal psychologist’s viewpoint. It is completely fascinating. I was maybe starting to doubt RA’s guilt, but with the evidence, which in my opinion, there are too many coincidences, and Dr. John’s analysis, I think he’s totally guilty. Too bad the jury can’t hear from Dr. John. His analysis was far better than any of their expert witnesses. I was disgusted that the court was concerned for RA’s dignity. That was absolutely outrageous and disgusting to me. As a parent, i wanted to rage for the girls and their families. That was absolutely foul. I pray for justice for Libby & Abby! May those precious, beautiful girls forever rest in the arms of the Lord!

Two points. The only thing I heard Dr. Walla communicated to Ricky, regarding her "True Crime" exposure, is that he has supporters out there. I also would like Dr. John to give insight as to the marriage dynamic between RA and KA and him being "unguided" from her. He begs for her permission to tell and she doesn't give it. I would hope my partner would encourage me to tell the truth.

I so appreciate you both, Lauren and Dr John. I think Richard Allen is guilty because the evidence, while thin, has lead me there. I think the defense has done a lackluster job at best. I'm starting to think that the divide on this case is emblematic of the greater issues going on in our country. The distrust of the media in general and as Dr John said, Allen represents the little guy in many peoples minds. I think the fact that this trial hasn't been livestreamed is a huge part of the problem, this is an example of why trials need to be available to all of the public not just the ones who are willing to deal with unreasonable obstacles to get in. I came here from YT. This specific podcast should be named “Dr. John unfiltered” 😅 Unrelated to the RA confessions. My cousin moved to Delphi, IN the summer of 2016 and she still lives there. Her neighbor’s granddaughter (college student) was chased on the Monon High Bridge trails the morning of February 13th, 2017 by an unknown male. It was reported to the FBI. If that is true, I’m surprised it hasn’t been brought up in court.

Just my opinion from what I know about myself and what I’ve observed in others. When Lauren reported on the jail calls, I 100% thought he was confessing to alleviate the stress of what he’d done. I still think that. I think that everyone telling him he didn’t or to stop talking about it gave him some anxiety and frustration that no one would listen to him. I think the psychosis was real but since it occurred after he received discovery from his lawyers, the level of evidence further overwhelmed him and stressed him more. Not being heard or believed by those you love that could confuse him when he’s trying to alleviate internal pressure. If you add stress of info/evidence the attorneys gave him, whether or not it was sufficient for conviction, he could have interpreted it as enough which added further stress, leading to a mental break. Edit: listening to the 11/5 summary. The solitary confinement expert says that “I think” suggests false memory. If I remember right, RA didn’t say “I think” until after his wife pushed back and told him he didn’t. If he’s psychologically dependent on her, wouldn’t that mean that he’d be more likely to accept her thoughts over his own? He’s certain when he first confesses. When she pushes back, he becomes less certain or uses “I think” as a means of arguing with her without confrontation. That suggests to me that he did it but used “I think” either as a means of arguing with his wife or that she planted the doubt in his mind.

There is a lot to be said for the cathartic confession. I understand that it’s alleged that Richard Allen has been historically much more upset after meeting with his attorneys, and I really feel like that’s because he keeps finding out how bad it looks for him. I hope that they are listening to him in regards to how he wants to move forward, if he would rather plead guilty he should be allowed to.

I can’t remember if I heard this through you, Lauren, or the Murder Sheet. But I thought Dr John might be interested in knowing that somebody observed Richard Allen, maybe it was a guard? They observed him right before he went for it and drank out of the toilet, they saw him looking at the toilet and trying to gear himself up to do it. I’m pretty sure that’s testimony. So right before he goes to drink the toilet water because he’s so psychotic, he’s taking deep breaths and steadying himself for what lies ahead. That is not psychosis.

I’m posting this on here because I hope to get Dr John’s answer to this. I am listening to the live from last night and my interest was piqued when I heard them talking about delirium. I am an ICU nurse and I see people with hospital acquired delirium all the time. Most of these people have no history of serious mental illness but they can experience hallucinations, delusions, and erratic and bizarre behaviors. But delirium is not a mental illness, it is a psychiatric syndrome that is reversible. It is triggered by lack of uninterrupted sleep, inability to tell day from night (ie leaving the lights on at all times), physical illness, sedation, and even constipation. Did I hear right that the person who dubbed him “psychotic” stated that delirium is a mental illness? Because that is simply not true. Just wondering your thoughts on that! Love you guys!

Sorry to hear you're both being subject to this, I know it can become too hard to take at some point. It's helpful to hear Dr. John's insight into the bizarre vitriol that has emerged over the course of the trial. I've noticed an anti-science attitude in the RA defenders on YT, and a repeated misunderstanding of "reasonable doubt" to mean "any doubt at all" or "doubt about anything and everything." As if "I doubt, therefore he's innocent." The protracted investigation followed by the closed trial feeds into the fantasy of an evil state vs. the weak individual, which is why Lauren's going there and reporting on it is so important and helpful. That you'd receive anything but thanks for your sacrifice, and that you'd be actually lambasted instead, is outrageous and disheartening. I hope you can find a way to just ignore the nasty emails and comments as much as possible.

If you ever want an explanation of psychosis I can help. My mom had it paired with bipolar my whole life. She was misdiagnosed with schizophrenia until I got her a dr 35 yrs ago who was a psychiatrist and neurologist Dr Nanda in Louisiana. She spent months every year of ,my childhood in and out of psychiatric hospitals. She hallucinated and was in fear when she had episodes. They were always when she decided to quit taking her medicine. She took haldol also. She thought my step dad was always trying to kill her. She would call the police and they could tell immediately she needed to go to a hospital. She threw out all of our mattresses because of bugs. Our microwave because of radiation. She tried to jump out of a car when we were taking her to the hospital, she thought we were trying to take her to the woods to kill her. There was no getting better without a month in a hospital getting back on meds.

Didn't RA give a very coherent timeline of the crime, stopping to get a six-pack, drinking 3 beers, going to the bridge, seeing the girls and following them to the end, telling them to go off the bridge, seeing how young they were, seeing the van and then killing instead of SAing them. I don't know how to articulate the reasons why, but I went into the trial thinking he was probably not guilty based on all the outrage on social media. The Wife and Mother know everything is recorded and can be used as evidence. They Have been told by his attorneys not to talk to him about the crime. Instead of keeping a killer behind bars and knowing the truth they would rather want silence. Personally, he just went cray cray right before trial and threatened to kill people because he was not allowed calls with his Mother and wife. The judge didn’t allow it but it happened. I personally don’t want a loose cannon out in society but it was the judges call. Prosecutors didn’t get it in before they rested.

Abby, Jane Marie and JG I sat on a jury the first week of Chad Daybell trial. It was such a learning experience. Now I live in a different state but nothing the defense says is to be considered. Their words are not evidence and the jury is instructed of this. The trial I was in lasted a week and it was a guilty verdict. Now at first some jurors were not sure but over time we looked at and discussed the facts and evidence. Nothing else. We looked at witness testimonies and photos and videos and used our “common sense”! Which thankfully our Judge emphasized. I hope this jury does the same. So many people out in you tube land do not understand law or evidence and use common sense. The whole point of the jury is to listen, note and take in the trial and the facts and evidence. The prison officials and police etc are not on trial. RA is! We have become a society that really can’t focus and is so worried about unrelated issues and emotions. Any who, let’s hope and pray for common sense and right over wrong. Rights are important but when you break the law and stalk, kidnap , sexually assault and kill your right is to not speak and get an attorney. Maybe Richard Allen should have thought about that.

I’m not Dr. John so take what I think with a big grain of salt, of course! But I think it all depends on whether the jury believes he’s in psychosis or not during the videos shared. I listened and believe the testimony that talked about how people in prison do the kinds of things he was doing in order to get attention (they are being manipulative). For example, it was testified to that inmates will smear their feces on themselves because they get attention and get to go take a private shower. In that context, if I were a jury member it would backfire that I was made to watch this guy play with himself sexually and with his feces. However, I’m worried that most people who see “psychotic-like” faking behavior will believe it because it’s just so foreign to what most people’s experience is that they can’t imagine it is fake. If they believe the behavior, I think it will benefit RA’s defense, unfortunately.

I can’t understand why his wife and mother never considered his confessions could be true. If my husband confessed something like that to me I would be shocked and horrified and absolutely struggle with disbelief but I would ask questions. I’m so heartbroken for Abby, Libby, and their families, I worry they won’t get justice.

Abby in reference to your comment on my comment about not becoming crazy overnight..I was referring to Dr. John's reference about "planfulness" and psychosis (and yes he is the expert speaking). If I misunderstood him I apologize but for now I will stick to believing that yes you can have a situational psychosis but that doesn't make you crazy/psychotic. You still need others factors to be present for about 6 months i believe.

Also, other than the unique setting of working with criminals in the culture of prison, Dr. Walla’s role was the same as any psychologist that treats any patient. In therapy, a psychologist needs to establish a “therapeutic alliance” with a patient in order for therapy to be effective. That means the therapist needs to have positive regard and empathy for the patient. The patient’s wellbeing is the focus. Therefore, it’s a conflict of interest and a clinical psychologist won’t be able to be as impartial about their patient as a forensic psychologist whose job is simply to assess X, Y, Z about the inmate and testify for the prosecution. Clinical psychologists typically try really hard to disclose as little as humanly possible about their patients if they are required to testify in court. Again, their job is to benefit their patient…their duty is to their patient. They aren’t just an impartial expert witness and trying to put them in that role is…icky.

Yes. I respect John' views a lot. But in this case if he hasn't listened to the reports or people in the courtroom he doesn't have the full story. I feel like both he and Lauren thought he was guilty going into the trial, so they are looking to confirm that. There are other people who are on the other side trying to confirm their views. But anyone who doesn't question the way this prosecution has been handled and how the judge has locked this trial firm and is not allowing the defense a fair trial, need to dig a little deeper. As an attorney following this very closely, I am very troubled. I don't know who committed this heinous crime or if RA is guilty, but I do know this is not how our justice system is supposed to work. If it can happen to RA, it can happen to you or your loved ones.

I can’t remember a case where I thought the defendant might be innocent either. I’m not ignorant or refusing to listen to both sides. I just think there is reasonable doubt after looking at everything. I desperately want justice for Libby and Abby. I’m just not convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that RA is guilty and could not convict him based on what has been presented. You are not alone in your opinion!

So Dr. Walla’s job was to treat RA. Part of her job in this prison setting seems to be the point person to advocate for patients with the psychiatrist in order for them to receive any needed medication. The incarceration setting is somewhat unique in that it’s very common for inmates to fake psychotic symptoms in order to get what they want. So when Dr. Walla treated RA, she had to determine whether she thinks he was genuinely in need of anti-psychotic (or other) medication. She won’t want the patient to be over-medicated if they are faking. And her therapy approach will also be different with the patient if they are faking. But her reason for assessing their mental state is for the inmate’s benefit — for their proper mental health treatment and wellbeing. With a few specific exceptions, treating (clinical) therapists have a primary duty to their patient and their patient’s wellbeing as well as their patient’s privacy. Making Dr. Walla basically testify for the prosecution in the manner they did is really icky, ethically, because her job is to treat RA, not to testify in court against him. Therapists usually try really hard to disclose as little as possible about their patients if they are required to testify in court about them. It gets into a very ethical gray area. But the prosecution really used Dr. Walla in the role that a forensic psychologist that wasn’t treating RA should have filled. Dr. John was trying to say that it should be the job of a forensic psychologist to assess RA for the purposes of testifying to RA’s mental state in court. That shouldn’t be a role that is mixed with the role that his treating therapist should hold. I believe an outside forensic psychologist could review video evidence and notes, as well as test RA to determine patterns of behavior that indicate faking psychosis or not (for the purposes of the court knowing if he was/is sane when he said things). I hope that helps!

Last night as this played I commented and Dr. John is spot on! Richard Allen by his own words admitted he killed Libby and Abby! No one forced him to! He was mentally ill before he went to jail and was on medication. He has issues with sex! He admitted to being and doing SA! He went to his Mother’s that day in February and instead of going to lunch with his Mother and Sister he drank three beers! Umhhh does he have issues with females? His Mom? His sister? Then he went home to bundle up on a warm day! Boots, layers, big jacket, scarf, hat! Wonder about the scarf? Got his gun and box cutter! Drive to the bridge and did he drink more beers? He admits he was there his car was there. He walks to the bridge. He goes to look for fish! He likes fishing. Who really are the fish? What is he fishing for? Just wanted to watch the fish! He sees the fish and girls. Four girls he says are three. He sees two alone! I believe he waited for them and trapped them. He says he did! He ordered them using his gun for intimidation to get them down the embankments! Libby’s phone documents it. Libby and Abby document also on the phone with their words and video. Down they go there is evidence of the slide in the mud and leaves. Then he is going to assault them. He gets them across the water out of sight and makes them undress. He uses the gun again to intimidate. He sees Abby so young! Then maybe he hears and sees the van! No time to R them. Maybe he lets Abby dress. Or maybe Libby helps dress Abby? I think he kills Abby first. Libby runs or fights back. He kills her and drags her over to Abby! He tries to hide what he has done! He tries to hide their wounds. He tries to hide their bodies but he needs to leave. He leaves throwing clothes in the water or some were discarded while crossing? He is seen leaving on the road muddy and bloody! He knows he has been seen! He does admit to the police, it is not me on the bridge if it is on the girls picture from the phone. I think Libby hid the phone. Why the box cutter to the throat? No noise, no drawing attention. Did the girls scream maybe? Maybe he used a bra around Abby’s mouth. Why so much force against Libby? Maybe she tried to run, maybe she tried to scream or struggle? If anyone thinks RA is innocent just listen to his confession, listen to his call with his wife and his Mother! RA states he has sex addiction and molesting! He has a conscious and wants to be loved even though he has done this and other things! He has killed the girls and his life and his families lives. He has killed his life with his future! Why does his family not believe him even when he admits it. Denial that their son or husband could be a child killer. All the defense theory and words are a circus. Were there mistakes? Yes but the facts and evidence is there. It is a time line, who was there video footage and yes confession! In the end it is not about the defense their words are not evidence. The jury should and I say should only look at the evidence! Not RA being in jail or prison but the evidence from that February day. The words of confession and the case in totality! Small town has now gone crazy. Maybe that is why the judge stuck to how a small town court is done? Do I agree? No but that doesn’t matter. What matters is Libby and Abby did not die for being carefree girls on a nice day in a park! This is a safe space to put this whether you agree or disagree! I have not commented much out in chat. I pray the families get justice and that the perpetrator is confined for the rest of his life. So he can not ever molest, stalk, sexual assault or kill anymore!

I have sat on two juries that convicted the defendant. I believe in innocent until proven guilty but generally when I watch trials I end up finding the defendant guilty being reasonable doubt after watching the arguments from both sides. In this case, I don’t see evidence beyond reasonable doubt and there is no justice for Abby and Libby if the wrong person is convicted. I’m very torn and want to see justice. I will have to trust the jury to make whatever is the right decision.

I live 20 minutes from Delphi Indiana and have been heavily invested in finding justice for the victims since Valentines day of 2017. I have seen so much hatred towards others and it's disgusting. With all that being said, every single the Patty's, Williams, Germans, and all the victims have done in honor of these beautiful girls is amazing and inspiring. As someone who works for the DOC I can say the description dr John provided isn’t 100% accurate. No hate but a lot has changed with restrictive housing.. federal law said you can only hold someone in RHousing for 30 days maximum but Allen was held in wayyyy longer than that for his “safety”. Inmates do get to have communication with loved one via phone/tablet and writing once a week while in RH. This is DOC policy and has been for years. While I can understand John’s viewpoints - I would hope one could see there is at least reasonable doubt because this case was not investigated properly.

OMG, I am listening to the part where Dr John is reading the letter!!! I am shocked, just shocked. I love you and Dr John. I feel that you are the most humble and compassionate channel in True Crime. I have never felt you were trying to sway people one way or another. You have occasionally given your opinion on something but immediately followed up with, "This is just my opinion., This is just Lauren speaking:" You have always told just facts. If you need to find something good from this e-mail...what I found was the wonderful sound of Dr John's laugh..so that is what I will take from that letter and keep with me and I think you should too and let the rest of it go. I agree. Evidence is badly lacking, and may have been manipulated by LE. However I also respect Lauren’s coverage, and Dr. John’s knowledgeable opinion based on many years of working with inmates. It is important to know all viewpoints. I disagree that people who question LE are “conspiracy theorists “. In all trials it is important to understand both the prosecution and the defense. It is my hope that Abby and Libby receive the justice that they deserve. I’m very for their families. It is not justice to charge and convict someone based on poor evidence. There’s 2 different questions at play: 1) did he do it? And 2) can the state prove it beyond reasonable doubt? To 2), unless the state has a great rebuttal, I don’t think they’ve met their burden. But I feel about that similarly to how I felt about OJ- grudgingly glad that the process worked and pissed on behalf of the victims and their families that the cops beefed it. A lot of true crime podcasters and YouTubers have literally changed to team Richard Allen due to the mob of angry people. All of this started with the defence team filing their Franks motion as a way to leak sensitive information and a conspiracy theory to these people on YouTube, even going so far as leaking the crime scene photos of the girls, intentionally I believe, to feed the nutters on YouTube. My dad was an Episcopal priest in the 1990s and he worked hard for people living with AIDS. He'd get hate mail daily. Re: Dr. John’s comments on Dr. Walla: Didn’t the prosecution ask her, on the stand, to comment on whether or not she believed he was feigning psychosis? Shouldn’t that have been grounds for an objection, if t Walla’s relationship with him was therapeutic and it would’ve been unethical for her to diagnose, as I think Dr John suggests? I guess the question is a matter of opinion ands was asked of many non-experts witnesses, but I don’t know. It just seems like it could be misleading to the jury to have a therapist on the stand opining as to Allen’s diagnosis (psychosis or no) when the jury isn’t necessarily aware that she is not in a position to make those kinds of claims, despite the expert nature of her title and treatment by the prosecution. Idk. Am I splitting hairs here?

With so much ‘noise’ in this case and as someone who does not have intimate knowledge of the legal system (thankfully) this is really something to make sense of. Even the notion of being tortured vs. RA feeling tortured gives me a broader perspective to consider. I just cannot overstate how grateful I am for your coverage Lauren- and your consistent awesomeness as a journalist and as a human being trying to bring light to how these two murdered girls ended up dead. I agree. The ballistics expert not being able to replicate markings until after firing the weapon and saying a cycled bullet and a fired bullet are from the same gun doesn’t make sense to me. I also think it’s fantastical that 1 man could have controlled 2 victims, killed them, and not gotten any blood on them. The only reason I question the confessions is because I experienced a year of psychological torture by my now ex. It can happen a little at a time. I was able to watch tv and call family, but I was tortured nonetheless. I think there should have been more investigation before going to trial because the evidence they have now isn’t beyond a reasonable doubt to me. On top of that the judge is going out of her way to make it extremely difficult for people to know what’s happening in court. Why? If someone can give me a good reason I’m all ears. But now I think the state has a person to put on trial and they want a guilty verdict so the case can be closed and the town can move on. I know that sounds like a conspiracy theory, but to me it makes sense.

This trial is a very difficult situation. I look at this through my own history of being subjected to psychological torture for a year by my now ex. I feel that since the trial isn’t even covered by an audio recording I know we’re only getting a partial understanding regardless of how good the reporting is.

I have been following Andrea Burkhart for this case. When I hear this I really feel John doesn't know enough of the background to know what has happened here... before he made this confession he told his wife or mother he thought he was going mad... Honestly I think he was actually. The odinism torture does make a lot of sense to me if you read through the whole document by the defence. This is a difficult situation.

I guess hearing what the defence presents will be illuminating one way or another. In the end I think we all want the same thing - to see justice for those little girls. One point Dr John touched on was the way that false confessions usually require coercion and one type can be internalised, could this explain RA confession to his wife and mother? Based on legal summary by Andrea Burkart (see interview on Grizzly True Crime) and reviews of jury reactions to videos on your HTC channel (and lawyer Lee) it sounded like RA’s treatment may have been outside the prison policy and humane practice, could it be that he felt coerced, especially given his fragile mental health? I also want you to know that I really appreciate all that HTC does, and the combination of your journalism and forensic psych perspectives are brilliant.

The prison didn't ask for him to be held there.. they hold convicted people. That's what they do and are use to doing. You can't expect a prison like that to know exactly how to handle a person who's acting this way in a different way than they normally do just because he is the one non convicted person there. He was getting as much special treatment as they likely could while still running a big prison with convicted.

I've always said to myself stop calling it solitary confinement.. he was more so in protection/suicide watch. He was given as much as they could give him without it being a detriment to his safety. I completely agree with you Sue. I desperately want Justice for Abby and Libby, however I am not yet convinced RA is the perpetrator of this crime. I am open to being convinced otherwise, but at this point in time there simply isn't enough evidence to convict him. I have also been listening to Andrea Burkhart who is also attending the trial. She has more than 20 years experience as a Criminal defense attorney and I trust her opinion on this case. She also believes RA is innocent and is appalled at the negligence and wrong doing by the State prosecution and Judge Gull. He made confessions long before he was given Haldol (so check your facts). People awaiting trial for heinous crimes such as this are always detained while they await trial. They have a right to a speedy trial, and they can wave that right if they want more time to prepare for trial. It’s how it works. They are a huge flight risk, usually a suicide risk, and at risk for being killed by any inmates at a jail or prison facility. They can’t just let them go to await their trial. Part of me wishes you got your wish…if he wasn’t held the way they did to protect him, he would have either killed himself (like he said he wanted to), been killed or seriously injured by other inmates (who made threats due to the crime he is accused of), and he probably would have been SA’d at some point. Would you prefer that? What exactly do you think the other options were? If you have an argument with the larger criminal justice system and how it works, that has nothing to do with this case and how it was handled, because it was pretty standard based on what he was accused of and what they had to do to keep him safe to get him to trial. It may not be ideal, but it’s the reality of how the system works. Sorry this is apparently news to you.

Great to hear Dr John on this, although I disagree with him a little about the causality of the Free Richard Allen fans unless he means less political party and more what drives people to their political opinions. Anti Government can be a left or right or libertarian view. I’m following the John o’Keefe murder trial and I am constantly shocked by the behavior of people who want to “Free Karen read”. People can slip into a psychotic episode after a stressful event (so yes, they do “become crazy” overnight). Psychosis is something that can come on with extreme stress, and it’s possible the discovery information caused him extreme stress in top of everything and that pushed him into a psychotic state. HOWEVER. Assessing whether or not RA was psychotic at any point is the job of a psychologist. In this specific context, the expert to assess this would be a criminal or forensic psychologist, because they are trained to detect faking vs. real psychosis. They are aware of the ways that people in prison commonly fake “ crazy” behavior. Was RA ever psychotic at any time? No way to know for sure because they didn’t really bring in any other experts to evaluate him and tell us. We only have his clinical psychologist and she says he did have one episode of psychosis but it didn’t encompass the entire period he was confessing at all. Even if RA was psychotic, it doesn’t mean that he didn’t kill the girls and it doesn’t mean that his confessions were false confessions. It could just mean that he had a temporary episode of psychosis and during that time his confessions got a little more confused (like when he said he shot the girls). Unfortunately, the jury is now placed in a position where they aren’t qualified to determine if RA is psychotic but they will have to decide for themselves. I think most people would be fooled by criminal malingering when a forensic or criminal psychologist wouldn’t be fooled, so I’m pretty worried this will mean we won’t get justice here 😞

One question I have is, and I’m going to try my best to make my question make sense, after he received his discovery and started (for lack of a better word) “going crazy,” could it also be because seeing how gruesome it all was sent him legitimately into psychosis? That’s something I’ve been wondering the whole time. Because yes, if he is the killer, he could see it and then try to feign psychosis. But if he isn’t the killer could he see it and actually be sent into a psychotic episode? When I went to Lauren’s live in SLC with my husband, he could not fully finish his dinner because he’s not use to listening to crime stories and he lost his appetite listening to the one Annie shared. I don’t think seeing crime scene photos would send him into psychosis but I know he would not be well if he saw something so intense. However, I imagine more of a physical reaction like he had listening to a crime. Maybe vomiting, nausea, increased heart rate? Not necessarily the mental health symptoms RA seemed to have. Anyway, that’s one of the things that’s been on my mind. Thanks for doing this guys. Wish I was able to go back with you, Lauren!

Thought #4 — I’m not sure if Dr. John would have anything else to add, but I am curious to hear his take on KA’s behavior. Specifically, her change of behavior between the recorded interaction she had with RA during an interrogation and her recorded phone calls. Why would someone in her situation defend RA and respond the way she did to his phone confessions? Do you think she is just in denial because the evidence is not as clear-cut as DNA evidence? It sounded like she was overwhelmed and still trying to process things when she was in the interrogation interaction but then must have decided the evidence was weak and he didn’t do it so she’s created this narrative in her head that he was only confessing because they “did something to him”? I think she said something similar on one of the phone calls — something like “what are they doing to you — they are doing something to you — why would you say that?” From listening to family members of famous serial killers, it seems like the only reason they are able to accept what their loved one has done is because of DNA evidence and the FBI being like “this is real. There’s no way he didn’t do it” Do you think it’s fairly normal for someone in her situation to have gone this direction (denial), or what kind of tendencies would cause someone to go the denial route. If RA seems like he has a dependent personality issue, what would that mean regarding his partner (aka what kind of people pair with someone with dependent personality)?

Thought #3 — it’s been hard to watch such craziness and incompetence in the comments people online are making in this case. There are so many comments that defy logic, defy any kind of reality, yet the people are speaking with such certainty. I’ve been struggling with my feelings about this and understanding where this is coming from. I’d arrived at some very similar thoughts to what Dr. John brought up, so it also feels very validating that I’m not the only one seeing it these things! For me, I am seeing very similar themes running through how people are responding to this trial and our politics and culture at large in the US. We are in the age of “alternative facts,” and there is a large percentage of the population that no longer trusts in facts, science, institutions, experts. There is nothing someone can say to make them change their mind about a candidate or belief. Sadly, political propaganda has brainwashed a lot of people to dismiss anything that people in our culture would have previously given significant trust. For example, people testifying under oath. Do people ever lie under oath? Sure. Are they always factually correct? No. But traditionally, the fact that people were testifying under oath was something given significant weight and trust in the minds of our culture. It seems, for all of the RA defenders, all of these witnesses testifying under oath means literally nothing. Even RA’s own words mean nothing (kind of reminds me of a particular political candidate). So to me, what we are seeing here is a symptom of a larger dysfunction in US culture at the moment. There are many people who no longer trust in our institutions and sources of information if those sources do not concur with their opinion. Because of their distrust, they are apt to latch on to any ideas claiming there have been abuses or corruption by the system. Also, I think the temperament of the country is very tense and angry right now (with the election looming). I think people are displacing a lot of feelings about that into their comments about this case.

I'm really shocked at how many people are obsessed with 'Poor Richard Allen ' whilst not even saying 'if he's the wrong guy, what about justice for the girls? '. Their focus is completely on him and they don't seem to care about what happened to the girls - they seem completely uninterested in what they had to go through. It's horrifying how many people sympathise with a child killer as opposed the children who were victimised. It's troubling that they identify far more with him than them. He's been quite successful at distracting from what he did. Laura Richards from Crime Analyst always refers to 'Poor Me' syndrome becoming most acute at the point of accountability. RA must be really desperate to go to the length of eating his own poop to avoid facing facing up to what he has done he confessed and tried to walk it back he tried to unburden his soul when he had a come to Jesus moment but his wife and mother wouldn’t let him do it this is what upset him more than anything imo . Thoughts on that email. WOW. First, Lauren is reporting, literally reading notes from a trial the judge has closed to the public—no video, no audio. For those who want to argue the guilt, innocence, torture or support of Richard Allen, fine. It’s not for Lauren to decide whether he is guilty or innocent. She’s saying, “attorney asked this, the witness said this. I don’t know why so many people think they are intelligent when they’re making an argument badly, and I don’t always know what they are getting from attacking someone else, but it’s doing something fir them or they wouldn’t do it. Lauren, I feel like I know who you are, and more importantly, you know who you are. You and John know your true motivations, both of you. This kind of hostility has nothing to do with you, it’s about the writer in some way. Please don’t lose sight of how the victims’ families have responded to and comnented on your coverage. Or the comments that remind everyone that you and John have ongoing good relationships with so many of the families affected by other cases you’ve covered, so you must be doing something right. I love that while John is clearly laughing at the ridiculousness of this, he’s also outraged, and rightly. Both of you are baffled, rightly. I’m 58 years old and still can’t 100% wrap my head around how people can behave like this, but I think that doesn’t necessarily say anything bad about me. You can’t make sense out of nonsense, and the day to be concerned is probably if you’re finding that you can make sense out of nonsense. I love that John read the email to you, rather than “protecting” you from it. You’re his equal partner, not his child. In this way, he reminds me of my husband. Just this weekend I was telling my husband about Ted and his dog Red, and Libby’s father bringing banana bread(?) to everyone on the courthouse steps, and some other things like this, that have felt so heartening to me. He can’t deal with most of the cases and trials I follow, because especially any harm done to a child hurts him deeply, so I try to share information that I know won’t hurt him. But he knows who you and Dr. John are, and what I think of you. I believe you have elevated coverage of true crime; your partnership reminds me of my own marriage (that’s a really good thing). I admire and appreciate you both 💜

Wondering if people actually listen to the whole podcast bc of statements of RA being in solitary even though John explained how he was not in solatary ie he had a tablet..tv time..visits/calls with family..Therapist visits. RA didn't pull the crazy act until he read all the evidence LE had..you don't just become crazy overnight. I'm not saying he's guilty, I haven't decided yet. I want to hear everything from all sides..but it doesn't matter what I decide it's the jury's job and a very difficult one. RIP sweet Abby and Libby we all want Justice for you.

Thanks for this episode! The RA is innocent crowd will never ever believe he didn’t do it. There has been a toxic environment around the Delphi case for a while now. What Dr. John said about RA being the little guy and the state is railroading him is 100% right. They have to believe in the conspiracy so much so that each time new evidence comes out, they alter the conspiracy a bit to still fit their narrative. They’ve been fed propaganda by pro RA creators and will never admit that they are wrong. Even after he’s found guilty, the conspiracy will continue. It’s terrible and sad.

This was SO FASCINATING to listen too! I would LOVE to hear Dr. John's take on this after reading through all of the case testimony. You don’t ask a question that you don’t already know the answer to - or one that can open up a new can of worms…. Like “I see you take 4 blood presssure medications, what pharmacy do you go to? Why did you never report RA despite visiting CVS 86 times while he was on shift since 2017?”

Lauren and John, I just wanted to thank you for your coverage, and to thank you for knowing your own bias but still reporting as neutrally as possible. Financially I’m in a really hard season, but the least I could do was join for a month.

I certainly don’t understand the polarization in this case. I think it may connect to the political climate of our time. If someone doesn’t agree then they are your enemy. Sad we have come to this.

I think part of the deeper issue with people being so polarized and not being able to accept truth or facts that’s in front of their face is that there is an attack on truth in our culture.

Here is a question and I didn't want to post it publicly. Why didn't the prosecution ask the witnesses to point to the person they believe was bridge guy when they were on the stand? Yes he looks different today but it would have been a nice touch for the jury.

I have seen thorazine and haldol not calm a disturbed patient

I worked in large Psyche hospital- I never saw any patient do what he did- he was too organized- methodic-- in my experience when a patient was especially disturbed it was a disorganized erratic- not carrying out intentional behaviors

?? Dr. John, could the effects of Haldal meds have a truth telling effect? Could it subdue the anxiety enough to allow for truthfulness?

Agree. I too have major Depressive Disorder and it can cause me to be unsure of myself and I am very good at putting myself down. I believe RA was under a lot of stress and it caused deterioration but this doesn’t negate the chance he committed a crime.

There was a federal ruling saying 30 days is the maximum amount time - after 30 days you are literally violating the inmates constitutional rights.

I have Major Depression Disorder, was abused in multiple ways as a child resulting in Complex PTSD. I haven’t gotten so much as a speeding ticket. While untreated mental health issues can cause crime, I don’t think that someone shouldn’t be held accountable for their actions.

I absolutely agree with you two. The victims are Abby, Libby, and their families. Also, I have empathy towards RA’s family. However, I am frustrated at his wife and mom not believing him when he confessed multiple times to them. Yet, they just blamed everyone else but him.
