BTW the brain matures at 25. Labeling a 9 year old as a sinner is absurd IMO.

Roberta S Treacy

Also, the notion that an infant is born in sin is dangerous, and has long given rise to atrocities. A child may have a mental illness and may need treatment by psychologists or psychiatrists. The vast majority of children do not have mental illness. Children are small and therefore subject to the whims of fully developed adults. Seems to me that “original sin” and demonic possession are just convenient excuses for sadistic bullies. This crap about cowing them into abnormal obedience as practiced by Franke and her pal Jodie is clearly child abuse. The thought of how many children are subjected to this garbage haunts me.

I am weary of people using religion as explanations for acts of violence. I understand that we have freedom of religion in the US. I also understand that freedom of religion applies only as long as it respects the laws of our land. Deciding that someone - anyone - is possessed by demons/the devil, and then using that “belief” as an excuse to murder that “possessed” person is not a religion. It is murder.

I am just now watching this live - Thank You, it is so good! - and had to come over here to reflect on the blood atonement because it just blew my mind. To me it is entirely plausible that Alex Cox was convinced by Chad that he was this great protector of Lori and that he had to commit some awful acts to that end (read murders). And then what if the concept of blood atonement played into his own very timely death? I just can’t get over how convenient it was for C & L that the one person outside of their dyad that knew way too much and could jeopardize everything…just died a ‘natural death’ at this opportune moment in time.

"LDS Criminals" very interesting. Also very interesting was heading the theology that LDS believes that the age of accountability is 8 years old. Yet, these people (Chad,Lori, Ruby, Jodi) were believing that children were evil, full of the devil it Even submitted and needed to be abused or even KILLED?!? God help us that this Jury will be able to discern the horror for what it is and make this AWFUL man pay for his crimes!

I don't remember when I was taught it, but I was definitely young. I wanna say I was around 9 or 10? We had a lot of home teaching tho I think it was like, the Bible didnt specifically mention other planets...so? 🤣 I'll have to ask now that I'm an adult and out I know as i got a little older I remember my brother and I wondering if our God was the OG or if our planet's God was some dude that was promoted to God from another planet lol The older I got the more sense it made that it was the latter cuz everything seemed so flawed, so it just couldn't be the OG 🤣 Now that I'm writing it I bet that's how people end up in different varations or cults, because they're looking for explanations of things they believe in not making total sense, so they do enough mental gymnastics until it makes sense to them and then they believe they "recieved a revelation"

Emily M.

Also MormonStories (podcast) discusses it in detail and sheds light on the subject. ❤️

Colleen Canning

Well hopefully she will discuss it as I think the first second anointing was done in 1843? And the massacre was 1857? So it could be tied in with part of the blood atonement ( you’re allowed to cos you’re protected and it’s not really “murder” if justified? I guess we will have to wait and see :-)

Tad Auty

I highly doubt an official church historian will talk about the second anointing. Lookup Tom Phillips, a former high-up Church leader in England, if you’d like to learn more about the 2nd anointing.

The Mormonism that Joseph Smith founded was very much about continuing revelation and evolving doctrines. For example, the theology of the Book of Mormon is very different than the Mormonism we see a decade or so later in Nauvoo. After Joseph’s death, we see a much more stagnant theological evolution in the church. Do you think it’s possible that the reason Mormonism creates so many fringe prophets is because the ideas Joseph Smith established of personal revelation and continuing theology, and members aren’t seeing this in the mainstream LDS church? They see many policy changes, but I can’t help but wonder if the lack of theological progression leaves people longing for more.

From what I gather- oh gather is such a tainted word now isn’t it?! But I grew up catholic - 6th generation Aussie Irish immigrants. I did 12 years hard time at catholic school- plus we never missed mass and mum was always helping with charities. But our household was liberal and non judgemental and not dogmatic- more “what would Jesus do?” However I had friends whose parents were new Irish immigrants and they said the rosary and were basically disowned for going on the pill. From what I’ve observed there is a lot of diversity in Mormonism like Catholicism. Most the Catholics I know were fine calling out the behaviour of priests or our history of torturing people and exorcising people- however there are still many who refuse to acknowledge that stuff. Because they don’t know about it or don’t want to know about it. Catholics for example still have some fringe exorcists around- however never ever once ever in my home or my catholic education was I ever told that people could be demon possessed. And if anyone had suggested someone was demonic I’m guessing we would have been reprimanded for judging someone who was maybe mentally ill or struggling with life.

Yes this is the second annointing. It’s basically a get out of jail (or into heaven) card. Unless for murder. And let’s face it- many Christian’s don’t define killing people as murder if it’s “justified “ Death penalty- war- revenge etc So I suspect some people who think they have the second annointing - eg if Lori and Chad did their own wayward back yard second annointing- I can imagine they would say their murders were not murders but justifiable blood atonement freeing people of demons and sending them to heaven.

Tad Auty

If the Mormon faith believes one purpose of earthly life is to learn to choose good over evil, how & why do you feel Lori & Chad strayed so far from that belief?

Sue Komernicky

The second anointing is the secret ceremony where top lds members get a guarantee that they are going to heaven unless they murder someone right? And the wife washes the feet of the husband, etc, right? Just wanting to make sure I’m thinking of the LDS practice and not a specific Chad Daybell concept…

Isabel Hendrix

I also don’t mean to offend anyone who is still a believing member. There are just things that don’t add up to me 🥰

Fondow6

Yes I second this question, and I think John dehlin has made some good points as to it being mainstream (in his recent episode about Jodi & ruby). But it seems as though mainstream lds push back against this HARD, but it’s also on the lds website that satan can be inside someone, etc, so it’s obviously somewhat in the doctrine… It’s interesting how many lds push back saying that possession is totally NOT taught. I’d love to hear her insight on these points, the idea of possession and the pushback from lds folk when challenged about possession being mainstream.

Isabel Hendrix

I would love to hear more about this subject!!!

Q: Melanie Gibb had mentioned secret combinations. What is that? Where does it come from? Also, just wanted to say I love her work and her heart for the families of the victims of the massacre.

Jess Vickery

I have a very specific question because I stopped believing in Mormonism the day I heard it. At what age do Mormon children typically get taught about potentially becoming gods and goddesses of their own planets? My seminary teacher told our class this when I was 14, and I actually felt sick to my stomach. The Book of Mormon contradicts the Bible constantly. The Bible teaches of only one God, but the Book of Mormon trio teaches polytheism. *I’m sorry my question has a story, I just wanted to add a little context 😁*

Fondow6

This is quite an open question. But what's her views/reasons as to why she thinks people stray into into extreme beliefs with the Mormon faith. I won't be able to catch the live stream as it's to late here in Scotland but I look forward to watching it tomorrow.

Samantha Hughes

Q: Not sure this can be answered but, I’m interested in what your guest thinks about how religion plays into the development of extremism.

Carolyn

I would like to know if she has an idea of how many people in the Mormon church believe this way. I’m afraid is more than we think.

Collette Osburn

Just saw someone in Chat say they want to hear about second annointing.

Tad Auty

I'd love to know more about possession being taught in main stream lds ... Is it taught that the devil can be inside people?
