The Chronological Syrus: Part 2 - 2015 - 2022

2015

Not much of a year of change for Sy - that’s coming up later - but I did a test run of sorts with a Lesser Than Three comic and jeez my dude I apologize, I went into this wanting to draw something lighthearted, I didn’t mean to give you that much anxiety (yet)!

The second pic was from an outfit prompt, which I believe was Sy getting ready for prom. He cleans up decently! His hair starts to take it’s stylized shape here.

2016-2017

The dates on the sketches are a little iffy, so I’m assuming that I started them in 2016 but only posted them in January 2017 or else things don’t quite seem to match up.

So a little movie called Zootopia came out in 2016 - life changing, God bless it, the entire world is better for it. I think seeing that really made me want to push my designs and make them look less like people and more like animals - and wouldn’t you know it, the whole comic is better off for it too. I started getting a way better grasp on shapes here - his hair purposely stylized, he has proper yeen ears, and more sloped shapes to emulate a hyena bodytype. This is where he got really fun to draw!

Notes from top to bottom:

* Bangs alway point left when facing forward, rest of hair points right. (I have no idea if I kept doing this, ha)

* Ears point slightly downwards (aka not straight up)

* Sloped shoulders - partially due to bodytype, partially personality type

* Finally go for 4 fingers?

The description for this one was “If you took a shot for each time I decided to tweak this kid’s design, then over the course of 10 years you’d end up with a very strong buzz” and yeah, that checks out. This one actually kinda blows my mind because if you sort out my galleries by just Syrus pictures, there’s nothing in between this and Prom Syrus! It’s like night and day, what a huge boost in quality! To think just a year before I was drawing him like an actual potato. I’m not sure what else happened in 2016 but whatever it was, thank you.

Lesser Than Three officially launched in 2017! Syrus was in the first strip, but his first solo strip also went… as well as could be expected for him!

2018

You didn’t think you’d get through this without seeing one more stock image ref, did you? This is the finished version of the sketch from earlier, you can see I pushed some of the shapes more in the final.

2020-2022

Do you remember with Tanner how I mentioned I’d often use the last pic of him I drew as reference, which ended up being a game of ‘telephone’ with myself that altered his design a bit? That’s absolutely what happened with Syrus’ neck and this the worst case of it, with the tufts of fur getting way out of hand. It’s another one of the few things I’d go back and fix here and there in the off chance I’d get to publish these comics down the road. Despite the gills he has going on I still like this one a lot - any chance to harass this guy!

There was a brief time where separated out the bangs from the rest of his hair a bit - which I don’t dislike really, but it’s just something I ended up dropping for simplicity. 

This one was drawn specifically to fix up his neck and keep myself on model for the Unsocial comic. But it's NOT a model sheet, no! Unfortunately this was the last time he ever looked content-

...Because of 2021’s unfortunate zombie apocalypse. RIP Lesser Than Three.

And Sy gets the first solo Lesser Than Three pic of the new year to boot!
