one more thing bc I adore your content and wanted to share this: I was reading the Orthodox study Bible recently, which is definitely not always correct, but their note on Deuteronomy 23:20-21 (condemnation of usury) really struck a chord with me as it kind of summarized my entire worldview that stands in contrast to the dominant “Christianity”, and it’s described as a paraphrase of John Chrysostom: “Charging interest (usury) was a subtle form of greed, for it used the pretense of relieving a need to gain a profit. This was a subtle device to extort money from a poor brother in the name of doing him good. It relieved poverty to make a gain from poverty. It used another’s need as an occasion to become wealthy.” Imagine what would happen if all professing Christians took this sentiment to its logical conclusion

I adore Matthew 5 but I love Luke 6 even more, especially because it explicitly does the you say x but I say y but regarding the law against usury. It’s crazy to think modern professing Christians practice usury at all when Christ contrasts the common sense, universally accepted practice of receiving as much again (v 34), and says even this is not enough, and that in order to properly love our enemies we must not only not charge interest, as is easy and something even non-Christians should easily understand, but should not be creditors at all (v. 35)
