Case 320: Veronica Abouchuk & Kathleen Henry

Case 320: Veronica Abouchuk & Kathleen Henry

In late September 2019, a woman reported that she had discovered evidence of a brutal crime. A discarded memory card she’d found on a street in Downtown Anchorage, Alaska had video and image files depicting the torture and murder of an Alaska Native woman. The investigation that followed revealed the stories of three women – Kathleen Henry, Veronica Abouchuk and Cassandra Boskofsky – who had all fallen victim to a serial killer…

Who pauses their subscription?!? This makes me want to up my contribution. My career allows for vacation that I still get paid for. Yeah the breaks are sometimes long but Casefile is worth it. So worth it!! Thanks for another great episode! Bummed I’m missing you in London this weekend, Casey!

What a case. We always hear that law enforcement don't care about the murders of women of sex workers, but they care even less about that of indigenous people. Till next time, Casey & team!

So glad those brave activists are targeting that Calhoun guy, the absolute cretin. The idea of how many men are possibly quietly complicit in consuming and enjoying this type of ‘content’ (nevermind helping create it) is horrifying. I also love how Valerie who was homeless managed to find and use an SD card to transfer those vile videos!!

Alex Ryan

Thank you Erin for writing it as “addiction disorder”. A simple yet powerful word makes an enormous difference.

Zac

I think not having arms long enough to protect everyone is what makes people go crazy.

"couldn't you just increase your output?" No "Why not hire a second narrator?" GET OUT

Suicide Sauce

Enjoy your so called break that isn't really a break, we will miss you, but do what you need to in order to continue to create such amazing content.

Melodie Roth

And take the break, Casefile team! Paid time off seems to be a pretty good thing from my vantage point as a Europe-based employee, so I would hope the artists I support on Patreon get to have it.

TheodoraTheExplorer

Impressed by Valerie's bravery, I hope wherever she is, she is well.

TheodoraTheExplorer

Omg I can't stop thinking about that black bag that the police found and lost 😢

Zoe

I listen to every episode of the show, so the breaks can be disappointing for me. I understand that it’s not a vacation, and the team spends that time preparing for the rest of the year. However, couldn’t you just increase your output to keep up with 52 episodes per year? If that’s too much work for the current team, then why not hire more writers or even a second narrator?

I am Australian, and I have never heard of bibblies, cravvy, cronker, fack and joddle, or grundle. Either these are made up (I haven't listened yet, so perhaps that is the point), or it is that curious dialect of the aerial ping-pongers.

Bob Trenwith

Well guys it looks like we're gonna have to make our own fun, or "grill our own bibblies" as the Australians say. Get ready for a rip roaring cravvy cronker, an old fashioned fack and joddle the likes of which you've never before seen. As sure as the bottle swings on Grundle Sunday in the downtown Victoria CBT, we'll be sure to keep the Johnny warm for you, Anonymous Host. Also very sad that these ladies were murdered as usual

Anyone who pauses their subscription isn’t really a patron AND doesn’t understand the meaning of the word

Parrots Liz

My subscription, that is. We are patrons here to support you year round for the in-depth amazing work the team does.

Never pause!

Immense devastation for Veronica Abouchuk and Kathleen Henry being murdered and for the disappointment and self-hatred that Alicia Youngblood felt to not be believed to drive her to suicide. So many women let down by the police and so much preventable violence.

Caolán

Enjoy the break-but-not-a-break, Casefile team!

Casefile I was worried this one would be too difficult and brutal but instead you guys found a balance that made it so interesting and harrowing. I am shocked and outraged that the police apparently just...did no investigation whatsoever into the photos of Cassandra they found? She had only been reported missing a MONTH before the murder they were investigating, and police couldn't be bothered to just...go look at some photos of recently reported missing women and compare them? It's just... sometimes you hear details about investigations that just make you despair. In a case that's otherwise full of people being brave and determined and everyone doing the right thing at the right time, this is the kind of thing that just leaves you wondering how we manage to solve crimes at all. The police literally had this whole case handed to them not once but TWICE, by two different women, and managed to be completely less than useless the first time and still dropped the ball the second time. Sigh. Anyway, thanks for another amazing episode, gang. And thank you for all of the details and broader overview and attention you gave to the plight of indigenous women in the US. The statistics on MMIW are honestly shocking. Oh and as always, enjoy your break, everyone!

AR

Your content is always top quality. Take a well-deserved break!

Lizzy Smira

Love the way you guys approached the topic of Indigenous people and associated trauma, mental health conditions and substance abuse disorders with care, empathy and consideration. There are deeply rooted systemic problems in these cultures and societies and this is the result of that.

Courtney Mackey

See you soon. Love your work.

21:58 - "downtown Alaska"; I think the writer meant "downtown Anchorage".

They are the best! 🙏🏾
