I was surprised how many of the staff members mentioned they didn’t think it was homophobia with regards to the Hibbens case. My own take was it was textbook homophobia. I know Australia is not the US but it sounded so much like toxic homophobia to me .

2025-06-30 23:46:46 +0000 UTCRegarding the Keith Hibbins Q&A, I want to reiterate the poor behaviour of crowds in AFL and other sports mentioned by Elsha. I have taken my child to AFL member's areas and the crowd was abusive, crude, violent and generally appalling. I admonished the members around us on one occasion because my child was quite shaken. Once the frenzy is over these people return to 'normal'. I also want to say that this behaviour was by both men and women in equal parts. I know these days the term toxic masculinity just rolls easily off the tongue, but this collection of behaviours is not connected to a Y chromosome.
