Case 276: Claire Acocks & Margaret Penny

May 3 1991 was a typical Friday for 58-year-old Margaret Penny. In the afternoon, she visited the Old London Coiffure in the heart of Portland, Victoria for her weekly hair appointment with 49-year-old Claire Acocks. But when the two women are found stabbed to death in the salon’s shampoo room, the Portland rumour mill goes into overdrive.

Who could be motivated to commit such a brazen and vicious crime in the middle of the day, in the busiest part of town? And who was the “horrible man” with a hatred of hairdressers who had tormented Claire in the weeks before the crime?

I think it’s safe to assume that confirmed alibis have been vetted by law enforcement.

Jaye Leppky

Now do Portland, Oregon :D

Ira Finn

Unsolved cases always get under my skin… One thing I always wonder about alibis is when they say it was “confirmed” how do we know? Was it documented as such by law enforcement, or is this the writer’s conclusion based on more detailed documentation?

J. Chips

Yeah, noted.

Yes, thanks.

Portland is pretty place. Not a pretty Penny though...I hope they are able to use ancestry DNA. I hope they went through those on board the MV Portland thoroughly. I've seen those big rear courtyards in Warrnambool frequently. They're a bit Jack the Ripperesque at night.

Sitting here working and listening to this ep, hear a seagull faintly in the distance. Ah, seagulls... wait, I live in Ohio. All we have is Maumee Bay. Oh right, baygulls. If only I had some cream cheese.

Suicide Sauce

I’m so confused why Russell was not looked at more deeply. This seems like the sort of crime that he would eventually escalate to no?

Ashley Batton

what a heartbreaking case. I hope these families eventually receive justice. (wow i will never look at one of those combs the same way again.)
