New platform poll

Patreon supporters!

As we gear up for 2024, we have a question for you.

We have an opportunity to move from Patreon to Supercast, a subscription platform specifically made for podcasts.

It means that you could easily take the premium RSS and listen to the app of your choice, like Apple, Spotify, or others.

There are options to make the Q&As more interesting, and what's more important is that we could then offer separate feeds to ad-free Casefile Presents shows.

We can't do that on Patreon, as we only have one feed.

The move would be straightforward, and Supercast would honour any upfront Patreon subscriptions, so if you purchased a few months or a year upfront, they just move it over.

Same with moving the account, just a couple of clicks.

At first, we would keep Patreon, but the idea is to (maybe!) gradually move everything so Supercast would be one place for all premium, ad-free content we produce. Podcasts, Q&As, Casefile Presents, videos etc.

But we don't want to rush into anything, and we'd appreciate your feedback and selecting the answer in the survey.

Thanks, and speak soon!

Casefile Team

P.S. If anyone already uses the Supercast platform, write down what you think about them in the comments - better/worse than Patreon?

Comments

Super late to the convo, but I would be so happy to have the ad-free version easily on my Spotify where I listen to the rest of my podcasts, right now I have the casefile RSS feed directly into my Apple podcast app and I only remember to open it for a 10 episode binge every 3 months or so

Vanessa

I would be hard to make an app worse than Patreon. Each update is like a bad practical joke.

PJ Doppke

I hate patreon. Its worthless using the app on my phone. Half the time it just spins and I end up on the website page with ads. I will gladly stop using patreon and go to another platform. Fingers crossed that I can stop using this app.

Breanne Bieghler

For heaven's sake please find another platform. Patreon app is buggy for me to the point where I can't use it on my phone most days. I love your podcast and would love to be able to actually access it from my phone on days when I want instead of when my app wants to cooperate lol

Lin Estes

I love Casefile and will support you and follow wherever you go. Change can be great!

Amie

😻😻 Love Casefile & will follow wherever you go! Thanks for seeking our input!

Nancy Ligos

I run a podcast review service where 100 people subscribe to Patreon and independently score and recommend podcasts to the public. Casefile is great but we wouldn’t follow.

Rhys

Everyone worried about having to add another app, and feeling overwhelmed are really making a mountain out of a molehill. Supercast can be used in your web browser, you don't need an app. Also, if you're really unsure about the whole thing, you really only need to access Supercast for payments. Your ad free podcasts are accessible on whatever podcast player app you've been using (such as Apple Podcasts). There's no need for panic 🤓

Jaye Leppky

Maybe your grandkid could help you 😉

Jaye Leppky

He wrote they would honour our paid subscription, there wouldn't be any double dipping.

Jaye Leppky

For my part I will follow Casefile to wherever it goes. I don't have an opinion on supercast because I have no experience with it, however, if it works for you all down under it's fine with me. Hey, have you considered doing a podcast on MH370?

Raymond Danford

Whatever makes you the most money, you’re worth it. That said, I’d love a feed I can import into Overcast.

Coquelicot

I don't think anyone has brought this up but would it be worth it to expand and stay on patreon but add the other platform as an alternative? Just throwing that out there!

AR

Other than Patreon is the one stop shop for other podcasts I support, the points you make suggest the benefits outway the costs. Plus, if I have to cutback support, Casefile will always be the one podcast I support.

Michael Brodie

I’ll go wherever you go, Casefile. Plain and simple ❤️

Chris Harfield

I'm not sure what clicking "interested" indicates exactly. There's no concise survey question in that post. I'm not interested in moving to a different provider, all of my podcast subscriptions are in Patreon, and I like having it all in one place. But if you left Patreon I would come along, I'd just grumble about it.

Flem Candango

I don’t need another platform to manage personally but I think I can subscribe to you via Apple Podcasts, correct? I can do that instead of Patreon

Megan

I just had the Stitcher end. Head Google Podcasts is going away. I mean I guess I can switch but I paid for the year. How does this work with my renewal? I don't want to pay twice.

Ally Jakubicka

If supercast makes it easier and makes more sense for casefile and everyone working on the podcast and all that then I'm in full support. Not a big deal to listen from a different website/platform. And makes sense as you mentioned with the casefile presents series. I'm sure it's easy enough to manage and if you keep sending the new episodes' links to subscribers via email then I'm sure I'd hardly even notice a difference anyway.

Kristah

I don’t need another app or service to manage, it’s all a bit overwhelming

DaveC

You're most welcome!

Sarah Daniel

So, is Supercast another app we would have to download to listen to Casefile? Apologies that I have no idea what RSS is or how it works… I’m a Luddite. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Melanie Sanders

I definitely prefer Patreon - my one stop shop.

Fiona

Thanks - I tried that but to no avail. Ah well. :)

Jess Chiller

I have no interest whatsoever in chasing podcasts across different support platforms. If the show leaves patreon, I'll probably stop subscribing just because I don't want the hassle of different memberships.

Skippy From That Podcast

I love that you're giving us a chance to have some input. Thanks for asking instead of just telling us what will be happening. After reading other people's comments I'm not sure I'm too keen to switch. Although you guys are, and probably always will be my only Patreon subscription.

Kath Tee

Better than Patreon because I could easily figure out how to add the RSS to Apple Podcasts . It makes things easier because I like them auto download for car trips.

slypslyder

I'm very indifferent. While I do support other creators on Patreon, I interact with it at such a small amount, moving to a different platform wouldn't impact me much. Actually it might get me to engage more with you. Either way, I'm here for the podcast.

Dan Grossberg

I have a couple of Patreon subscriptions and I'm not interested in another app.

Zach

I support you Casefile, forever and ever, ride or die

J. Chips

I like having all my subscriptions on Patreon. Makes easy for my insomnia to navigate a dark app during the night. It’s also the reason I pay for ad free. I think I’d need to look into how to make this new system work on Spotify, also another dark app, but I could be convinced. I’m just a medium old dog that likes my ad free tricks.

Jen Olivares

Switching platforms is probably a bad investment. I have never had issues using Patreon. Please offer a way for me to listen to casefile presents 100% without ads

BGood

Doesn’t matter to me either way :)

Laura Friedrich

I don't think Supercast has an app, though

Sarah Daniel

Supercast has a lot of issues from what I’m seeing online, and they only have an android app, not iPhone. The process of switching may seem simple, but it’s enough effort that I bet you will lose a lot of us because we just don’t want to switch and would rather wait for the free episodes to be released. Can you do a Q&A answering our questions about it ?

Sarah

It’s their PTO, Ruth.

Sarah

Following this bc I agree with all of it

Sarah

Thank you!

Patrick

I wouldn't mind if they honored our subscription AND had an app, but they don't appear to have an app. Also, how far back would the previous episodes be posted? I rotate through the older episodes frequently while waiting for new episodes, especially during winter break.

Sarah Daniel

Double tap it

Sarah Daniel

Supercast doesn't seem to have an app at all

Sarah Daniel

We are paying to support creators of amazing content. We are paying for ad free listening. We are paying for well researched material. We are paying to provide a buffer in case a team member gets sick the show doesn’t have to pause till they get better.

Saraneth

Double tap it

Sarah Daniel

I would be happy if you moved away from Patreon. This is my first time using Patreon, and the app and web software is very poor. I think moving to a better, more contemporary platform would benefit the show.

Aki

I know at least one of my other Patreon podcasts is on supercast-if the majority of them are I can make the switch, otherwise I’ll probably stay-nothing against you! It’s just to much to keep track of for something that only affects my life for an hour or two periodically.

Willow Hall

Production and staffing costs don’t go away, and this is totally voluntary payment-are you complaining about something you are doing voluntarily?

Willow Hall

Any chance of keeping Patreon up for those of us that really don't want to have to join yet another website?

Stephanie Carrin

Been listening since your Cain killed Abel episode! Whatever's best for the team I'll do.

Bill Mosko

This can be helpful https://support.supercast.com/category/53-subscriber-support

J. Chips

Trying to vote not interested but it keeps reverting my vote. I keep track of podcasts I like here and it's convenient for me. Unless there's a bigger % you get from supercast I probably won't move over.

Patrick

There have been other premium podcasts subscriptions that I have been a part of that have moved away from Patreon and it has always been a benefit to the creator and is the listeners. I’m sure you will benefit also!

Alvin Yarbrough

They're pretty upfront about when they're taking a break until. You can always stop until they start again.

Patrick

Bingo

J. Chips

Good point

J. Chips

We pay for quality not quantity. Nobody is forcing you to pay

J. Chips

I like the idea of having casefile presents shows without ads. I do like Patreon and I haven’t tried supercast but if it is made for podcasts then I’m sure the features would be worth the move.

Saraneth

The research on internet platform migration tends to show that the vast majority of people won't actually migrate to the next platform. Instead they will simply drop off or revert back to listening for free, and i don't know if you guys are prepared for the potential drop-off in patrons and/or backlash that might result. Patreon has the advantage of centrality -- we've all had to make our peace with using it because all the things we're supporting are here. Unless a bunch of major true crime podcasts are planning to make the leap to the new platform all at once, the impetus for listeners to create new accounts and deal with setting up new notification settings etc just won't be there. You guys have a large team of staff to support and i worry the financial risk isn't worth it.

AR

As a listener from your very early days, I'd support whatever works best for the Casefile team.

Kim Wong

Well not that it’s relevant to the supercast decision Casefile is asking about, but the rss link works in almost any podcast app you like. I don’t like the Apple Podcasts app or Spotify either to be honest and I have been using Pocket Cast for years as an alternative. It’s also available on Android and the web. (Though, it’s not free).

Lyman Green

I just hate that you continue to bill us while you take a break. What exactly are we paying for?

Ruth Tilleard

Also, I believe the options are deliberately biased towards seeking the change. Those who don't really care are being forced into the first option. There should be a three-option poll.

Bob Trenwith

I use Supercast to support Canadaland’s suite of podcasts. I find it easy to use. Granted I don’t use Spotify, so I can’t make a direct comparison for you.

Blake & Trish Lymburner

Been using Supercast to support Canadaland for years, I had suggested to various smaller podcasts that it would be a good option to add, with limited success. I like my experience w Supercast, in terms of easy of use & ability to update payment info I could not recommend it enough.

Blake & Trish Lymburner

I don't see that they have an app, so we would only be able to listen via the RSS into another player? Does that also mean we lose the little community we have thanks to the comment section? I've never used Supercast, so I'm not sure about the features.

Amber

My issue is that I’m not sure that I will be able to pay, as I don’t have a credit card, and my current card is not accepted by most international websites. So I’ll be forced to cancel my subscription

Linde

For trivial, selfish, but honest reasons; I'm not interested. The migration may be as simple as "a couple of clicks" , but that really isn't the problem. The real issue lies in the inconvenience it creates. Every new platform means another account to manage, another app to install, another item on my credit card statement to keep track of, and more emails and notifications to deal with. It's the cumulative effect of these small inconveniences that becomes a nuisance. Keeping all my subscriptions centralized in one place (Patreon) makes it easier to access and manage everything.

420_WEED_MANIAC_69

Never heard of it and not in the least bit tech savvy. Is this something I have to download? Is it available on android?

zoe

And can I download the file to my computer?

Bob Trenwith

Will the price remain the same guys

Jennie Clowes

Will this new site allow me to play directly from the site? I don't have a phone, and I only have a work computer so I can't download any "aps".

Bob Trenwith

I’m happy to follow wherever but would love something that works easily in Apple Car Play

Paula Creevey

H

Danny87

As long as it works for Australians & we have the RSS link, happy to go to whatever platform, thanks!

Amanda Knox

whatever works best for you and the team and what you want to keep doing i will be right there behind you

Lisa J

That's 💯 what I have just found. The only thing I can think of is adding a shortcut to homescreen from the Web direct...

Alex May

I listen to my podcasts at work, but due to my employment, I have to download the podcasts to my phone and then transfer the file to a USB stick (ancient, I know). I can currently only do this with Patreon, as all other platforms downloads are... not a moveable file? I'm not tech savvy, I don't know the term

Chloe Jones

I’ve done some googling and I’m a little confused by it. There doesn’t appear to be an App - at least not here in Australia. Do we know if this is actually a viable option for Australian subscribers?

Tessa

Does anyone use supercast currently? How does it compare to Spotify? Is it as easy to navigate as Spotify? Any response from fellow patreons/patroni/patronus' would be appreciated.

Alex May

I’ll follow you guys wherever, honestly. Casefile is one of the first podcasts I ever listened to and it’s still my favorite.

Brenda Wells

So long as Supercast honors my Patreon subscription, I'm game!

Rudy Leyva

I do find this app clunky to use with Apple CarPlay and the idea of all my pods in one place is appealing. I do love that I’ve been following/supporting so long on here but that just bragging rights, so it’s a reluctant yes from me

Katrina

Patreon is generally useless from my perspective save for the RSS link, which I plug into Apple Podcasts. However I also hate the Apple Podcasts app, so I’m keen for alternative options 😊

Tessa

I’m interested as the usability of Patreon isn’t that great. I have a couple of premium shows in this app and you can’t queue them or anything. It’s a bit clunky! Can’t comment on Supercast though.

Greta P

It's not letting me say Not Interested haha Let's be real though, I'll follow you guys whenever you go 💜
