Premium Episode #11 - Winsie Hau

Shortly before 3PM on Saturday, January 14 2012, the doorbell rang at the Hau family home. 49-year-old Chun Nam answered it. Standing on his doorstep was a teenage boy, whom Chun Nam didn’t recognise. It seemed reasonable to assume he had come to see one of Chun Nam’s two children. When asked who was looking for, the boy explained that he wanted to speak to Winsie.

Wait maybe I missed it but what was the punishment for the killer re-offending?

Sarah Kelly

A year?!?!? What a joke. A child was murdered, a man disfigured and a family destroyed. I get teenagers have brains that are still developing but if you take a life you should have to spend yours behind bars.

Megan

Maybe I'm cold hearted but I always feel like minors get away relatively scot free whenever they commit a serious crime in many western countries. When I was a teen i and many others absolutely knew what was wrong and what was right.

It's disheartening to know Winsie's friends preferred keeping their parties drama-free than making sure their friend was okay. I get being a teen and I can't say they didn't act like every other teen, especially young teens, but I wish they would have been more aware when Polly's rhetoric started to sound more angry and aggressive and that something was wrong.

When you hear about cases like these it’s always a stark reminder how cold blooded and ultimately dumb beyond belief supposedly “normal” kids can be. It’s also incredibly convenient how fast these kids go from stunted to the point of being completely irresponsible for their actions, to full rehabilitation in such a short amount of time. I’m all for rehabilitation in almost every level of the criminal justice system, but murder is a special case that deserves the highest scrutiny above and beyond a few satisfactory psychological reports.

How many episodes left this year?

Paul T

Pretty sure they are busy enough without having to release two new episodes in a week.

Bob Trenwith

Why is there always someone complaining. There's been plenty of normal length patreon/weekly released episodes. Some episodes are going to be shorter. That's just how it is if you actually want a wide variety.

Veya

Wow! As a Dutch person, this was a very comprehensive take on the so called “Facebook-murder”! I actually work within the tbs-system and you guys did a really good job of explaining the, often very misunderstood, system.

AVM

We are still one week again of the regular feed, the shorter Patreon pick episodes are simply part of the episode release cycle

Christopher Worrel

Wow, this episode was chilling, especially the passivity of the teenagers’ friends. I wonder what can be done to encourage teenagers to come forward in these situations.

Are you sure you have the pronunciation of Winsie right? W is not pronounced as an English V in Dutch, Mandarin or Cantonese.

Bob Trenwith

Not a fan of these being released as the weekly episode instead of a longer, full episode as it would be better to have both but looking forward to listening. I’m sure it’ll be great as always
