Case 223: The Kuřim Case

Eduard Trdý lived in the Czech Republic town of Kuřim. On Monday, May 7 2007, Eduard was home alone making some last-minute preparations. His partner had recently given birth, and Eduard was trying to set up a baby monitor before she and their baby daughter were discharged from the hospital. At around 11 AM, Eduard connected the device to his television. He scanned the channel selector, waiting for the live feed from the monitor’s video camera to show on the screen. An image did appear, but it wasn’t coming from inside Eduard’s home.

To everyone who enjoyed this episode or are curious about it; please read the Kurum Case book by Ryan Green. It goes into more depth and detail with more information and is a great read

What the hell are you on about...

camille girod

What the actual fuck... Well done episode. I'm just wrecked by this case!

Cate Ness

Cripes! This case is insane!

HelpFind Ajax&Stamp

I think I’ve heard of that case but I’ll Google it for a refresher. Sad when you hear such a horrific case and can’t imagine it happening but something similar has happened more than once 😥

Monica

I’ll check that out!

Monica

I will never look at a baby monitor the same way again 😑. What the hell 😳

Leah Budd

I think because when we hear crimes against a child we don’t automatically think of abuse/torture which can be harder for some people to listen to and hear.

Ashley DeMeyere

Yes them recognizing the song and listening through the wall to find the house playing it was next level!

Ashley DeMeyere

There's another case, too, currently in the US courts of Natalia Grace and her adoptive parents Kristine and Michael Barnett. But I did assume Orphan was loosely based on this story when it first came out.

Demi

I know. Nice name though ;)

Megan Brennan

Wow. But let me say I’m impressed with Casey’s pronunciations. Well done.

Megan Brennan

I googled this case and there’s a few YouTube video connections relating it to the orphan actually!

Natalie Jaramillo

Insane case. Every turn I found my self asking “what the fuck???”

Natalie Jaramillo

My heart sinks when I hear the disclaimer that this episode includes crimes against children. Had to listen to this one in chunks, too much to comprehend in one listen. Also, reminded me a little of the movie orphan, anyone else?

Monica

How do people like this exist? What the fuck did I just listen to?

Megan

JFC 😮😮😮😮

RubySpook

Yes this is the type of dark Casefile episodes that I love.

J. Chips

I don’t understand why that trigger warning is insufficient.

J. Chips

Such an incredibly shocking story. So well told!!

A TALK IN THE ATTIC

So awful but glad some was a lie. That woman was gay and the sister also. Clara suffered and her sons from two women and the brother. Yuk

Jamie Yardley

I am once again utterly mindblown what a story. That was pure madness

David J Osborne

This was such a wild case

PoseidonXcomics

This was tough to hear, also has there been an increase in cases involving children this year?

N Stevens

I also wondered about Barbora/Annicka's Norwegian connection. Did I hear correctly that she "showed up at the Czech Embassy with her father and lawyer" -- or did I mishear that? Her father? Who was her father? Wild. Like everyone else, I am left dumbfounded.

Jennifer

Agreed. When I post the teaser on the FB group feed, I’ll underscore to take his warning seriously. It was a tough listen but I was glad I stuck with it.

Miriam Dean

Absolutely insane case! Kudos to Holly- great organization to keep the twists coming. Does anyone know more about the connection with Norway? I’m assuming Barbora spoke Norwegian in order to create her alter-egos…? Seems so random.

Miriam Dean

Can we just take a moment to appreciate Eduard and the police for taking that video feed seriously? My first thought was Eduard would be accused of abusing the boy himself or the police would think the whole story was too fantastical to be real because in the US, we hear way too many times children falling through the cracks. I'm so impressed the police didn't let up until the found the truth!

Demi

Woah 🤯 what a case. Completely bonkers.

Rosie Overell

While the host gives their usual disclaimer for crimes against children and it is always appreciated, I'm want to add a big TW for child abuse. Yikes.

Eileen

What did I just listen too...

Amber Randall

Right?! This case is so completely wild and I cannot comprehend any of anyone's motives at all - and there were so many people involved??? Like if it were just Barbora by herself pretending to be a kid, sure. But everyone else?? What possible reasons could they ALL have had for wanting her to be adopted by Klara (and given daily sexual massages) AND for those little boys to be tortured like that? What did they all get out of it? It really feels like there's a piece missing here.

Emily

What. I can't even wrap my mind around the motives here, not even just on a detached, rational level. And the fact that there were so many perpetrators--how did those conversations even start??? And those poor babies. I hope the rest of their lives are filled with healing, safety, love, and comfort.
