There used to be legal accountability but they specifically removed it, years ago. I think they had some idea that liability would deter people from joining the civil service ... ? But one would think that sensible people would just refrain from doing unethical things, but maybe that's just me

Oh whoops about Iceland 🤦‍♂️ And also 🤦‍♂️ about civil servants getting away their with terrible actions

Stefan Bradley

Iceland is not a part of Scandinavia. The Bergwall case is so far beyond frustrating ... ! How it could even happen defies credibility. This man was severely mentally ill and also addicted to drugs - instead of helping him, his so-called therapists created a literal cult around him and allowed law enforcement to exploit him to make themselves look good, in the process further wounding a number of families of murder victims, who were expected to believe these ridiculous and grotesque stories of their loved ones' fates. This is the worst part of the whole thing. (One of the Norwegian cases, a child murder, will now never be solved because the police put it aside after pinning it on Quick and in the meantime the statute of limitations expired.) No one involved was ever penalized in any way (except Bergwall himself). In Sweden it's pretty much impossible to hold civil servants to account as they specifically have no legal accountability in their roles as civil servants.

Kristin Røe

Well you said Scandinavian, we had that Iceland case that Casefile did not that long ago when they pinned the murder on some innocent people. I’m not familiar with Sture Bergwell but it seems pretty frustrating when you Google it.

Stefan Bradley

Yes, Sweden is a mystery! It would indeed take an indepth special series to explain it. Are you familiar with the story of Sture Bergwall, aka Thomas Quick? Now there's something Casefile should really cover. The greatest legal scandal in Scandinavian history and literally zero consequences for anyone involved. Could only have happened in Sweden.

Kristin Røe

The team should do a Casefile Presents on Sweden authority so I can understand why nothing gets done in the country because it “happened in Sweden”.

Stefan Bradley

I have a question regarding Case 214: Kevin Hjarmarsson. Based upon the research you uncovered, do you feel like there's truly a chance that the boy's death was accidental (such as due to the pallet falling on him, or due to rough play with some other unknown child)? I feel like the evidence presented pointed pretty convincingly (albeit circumstantially) towards Felix's involvement, but toward the end of the episode, it felt like it was a 50/50 toss-up between accident and foul play. Which way does your research have you leaning?

Brent Amelingmeier

No consequences for the cops, because this happened in Sweden. No further progress in the case, because this happened in Sweden.

Kristin Røe

Case 214 Kevin Hjalmarsson - why did the cops face no consequences for their actions? And has any other progress occurred in the case, did they end up looking further into Felix?

Stefan Bradley

In Case 213 Frans Du Toit claimed he cast a spell on his wife Natalie so she would be unable to leave him and the spell was the reason she was sticking by him during his trial. Is there any information whether she did stay with him after the trial and conviction or did she ultimately leave him?
