Case 200: The Zodiac (Part 4/4)

On March 22 1970, 22-year-old Kathleen Johns suffered a terrifying encounter when her car broke down on a California highway. Was it possible she’d encountered the Zodiac Killer? Meanwhile, correspondence from the Zodiac continued to flood into the offices of the San Francisco Chronicle, claiming responsibility for several more murders.

Detective David Toschi, who was unwaveringly dedicated to unmasking the Zodiac, was led to a prime suspect – Arthur Leigh Allen. But was Allen responsible, or would the mystery of the Zodiac haunt California forever? All is revealed in our fourth and final instalment.

Case 200: The Zodiac (Part 4/4)

Comments

This mini series is another example of why you are the best true crime channel in existence. No extraneous dialogue, no light hearted banter, you take the subject at hand as serious as it should be and execute it with perfection. There literally is no one that comes close. I thought I knew most of the beats of the zodiac case but like always you came in with new information that kept my mind illuminated the entire time.

Given that the Zodiac case is one I happen to know something about, and given that I usually comment only once or twice on other cases which I don't know anything about, what exactly do you consider to be the issue in that?

Bob Trenwith

No, it's just the idea that you respond to damn near every comment made

Sean Boulden

It took 5 minutes. You don't think 5 minutes getting facts straight is time well spent? Or do you favour the Trumpian ideal of spouting false claims without research?

Bob Trenwith

The Californian police in this era were terrible! Can't believe they didn't catch him.

Nick Callanan

Thanks, guys! I really was never a fan of Zodiac because there's always been so much legend and rumor that gets reported around it that it's hard to look at it as an unsolved serial killer anymore. You managed to make this easy to follow and really highlighted how complex this whole case was. Great 200!

Demi

Wow... You've too much time in your hands. Way too much.

Sean Boulden

Just finished listening…BRAVO!!! I’ve been a fan from the beginning and loved this one. Keep up the good work 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Katy Turley

The last two lines of the message he left on the car door sloped down and to the right. That suggests to me a right-hander.

Bob Trenwith

I checked. There have been only two other podcasts of more than 3 episodes. (1) Case 109: Belanglo – Mar/Apr 2019 - 5 episodes in five consecutive weeks (2) Case 53: East Area Rapist – May/Jun 2017 This one was before they even settled on a consistent release day, let alone the pattern you refer to. The release days were Sun, Sun, Sat, Sat, Sun, the last two days consecutive, no gap of longer than 7 days. There was a 6th episode a few years later, after the sentencing. So – sorry – that is not correct.

Bob Trenwith

Is anyone else wondering whether the zodiac stabbings were perpetrated by a left handed person, or a right handed person? Even though Allen was ambidextrous, he likely would have favored his left (natural) hand during the murders…a left handed assailant could have narrowed down the investigation…thoughts?

Haley

They've done multi-part episodes in the past in their usual format of 3 on and one off

Sean Boulden

Kathleen Johns DID identify a suspect - Lawrence Kane.

Bob Trenwith

Nancy Slover, the lady who took the call, has stated that she is convinced that it was the voice of Richard Gaikowski.

Bob Trenwith

I absolutely agree!! 😍 I’ve seen the docs and gone down reddit rabbit holes, but Casey and the team strung together such a fascinating narrative and pace, it’s like it was all new information. And the production made it so impactful. I never once felt overwhelmed with details, which people often make the mistake of doing, with this case. It’s understandable why that happens, but CF stuck to the facts and events so well. It’s the middle of the afternoon and Im sitting in a well lit accounting office, as soon as episode 4 ended, I got the biggest chill and urge to run the fuck outta here. Hahaha! Damn it, Casey. 🤣

Jason Colombo

Just finished listening to all four parts at one time. As always , a stellar production. Am I the only one whose blood froze when Casey said “Good by” at the end of one of Zodiacs calls? I will never be able to in hear that.

Kathy Watson

Unlikely.

Bob Trenwith

Gary Francis Poste!

Evan Stone

Awesome end to the case! Have you guys thought about the amityville New York case? Could maybe do a multi part series with the Lutz family too

Eli Manning

Oh Jesus this is a big one but will be worth it like always

Angela

A frustrating case from start to finish! But very well done as always. One thing I'm confused about and hoping someone can give me some clarification on, is when the cab driver was shot and the police dispatcher mistakenly put the call out that the suspect was a black male, causing the two cops on patrol to disregard the man they slowed down next to who was later confirmed (I think) to be the zodiac fleeing the scene and hiding in the park, why were those cops never asked to identify any of the suspects such as Allen etc to see if it matched the man they saw then? From the description last episode, it sounded like they got a good look at him up close. Also the lady with the baby who jumped out of the car, I'm still a bit confused as it's a little ambiguous, was her account factual or just somehow it was never confirmed? Could she not have also identified possible suspects in the same way as the cops, seeing as she literally pointed to the wanted poster in the police station.

Alexi Ele

Wow! I'm literally standing up and giving Casefile a round of applause for this one. Gripping from the start of ep 1 to the end of ep 4. Thought I knew the case, but as usual Casefile managed to throw in details I hadn't heard before. Love it! Thanks Casey for your fab storytelling, as always 👍

zoe

I guess I could be ... something traumatic has caused me to block out all memory of what I was doing as a 4 year old.

Bob Trenwith

I think Bob is the Zodiac.

Candice Williams

We kind of knew that three weeks ago when they said 1/4.

Bob Trenwith

4 WEEKS STRAIGHT?!?!?!?!

Sean Boulden

Literally just clocked out from closing the bar and got this notification. Hell yes.
