Case 200: The Zodiac (Part 3/4)

On September 27 1969, friends Cecelia Shepard and Bryan Hartnell were relaxing at Lake Berryessa, California, when their afternoon was suddenly interrupted by the arrival of a menacing figure. His face was concealed by a black hood, painted with a crosshair symbol. The man unleashed a brutal attack on the pair before fleeing the scene. Two weeks later, San Francisco cab driver Paul Stine was fatally shot by a passenger. The Zodiac Killer quickly claimed responsibility for both attacks, leading to mass panic as residents of California wondered where and when he would strike next.

Please don't play audio clips during episodes ❤️

I started listening to Casefile a couple years ago and what drew me in was learning about new cases I'd never heard of before. When I saw that Casefile was doing the Zodiac I was a bit disappointed. Such a well known case with the amount of material out there I wasn't sure I'd enjoy it or even learn anything new. However, presentation is everything and I have been blown away by the first three episodes and have gone completely down the rabbit hole on the Zodiac. Well done!

Omg Cecilia and Bryan 😔 that scene from David Fincher’s Zodiac is one of the most terrifying pieces of cinema I’ve ever watched.

The Lake Berryessa incident was not described precisely as Bryan Hartnell described it. After stabbing Bryan and Cecelia the Zodiac had started to walk away, as described. But then Cecilia started groaning, and he returned and started stabbing her again. He then moved over to Bryan, but he was playing dead and after a few moments of contemplation the Zodiac walked away without attacking Bryan again. Also, Bryan stated that there had been no communication between him and the fishermen in the boat, other than an attempt to attract their attention, and they staring for a while then motoring away. It was only later that he learned that they had gone to seek help, and had not been aware at the time of an intention to do so. Also, how do you know what went through Paul Stine's mind?
