Case 148: The Miyazawa Family

The four-member Miyazawa family lived in a semi-detached, three-storey house in Setagaya’s Kamisoshigaya district. 200 similar homes were originally built in the area, but when the Miyazawas moved in in 1990, most of these had been demolished to make way for Soshigaya Park, a public recreational space consisting of play areas, tennis courts, and grassy lawns.

BT: Did what?

Captain Flint : I have a first name - why the animosity?

Bob Trenwith

I just really love how he’s doing exactly what he’s saying not to do... like the person who says “I won’t spoil the ending of the movie, but have tissues ready because he dies”

So Real

Uhhhhhh....? That’s either very well played sarcasm or “for future reference” irony lol

lmaoooo casefile's comment section is wild. yas girl i live for it

Cameron DelaCerna

Don't read the comments then until after the case, Trenwith. That is what I do.

Captain Flint

Here’s Bob again, self-appointed Comments police, trying to control everyone. Bob, newsflash: any moron knows to avoid reading comments until after they listen. Are you rude, stupid, or both?

Linda Cannon

I know, that is why I avoid the comment section until after having listened to the episode...

So glad you covered this case - it’s actually my all time favourite unsolved case! Another case from Japan that would be great to cover is the murder of Junko Furuta - absolutely brutal

Fran Batchelor

I can't say much because this case has me thinking deeply about it. The awful possibility is, that the killer met has his own end by now, maybe in a disaster or accident. But someone always knows something, so maybe information will turn up to solve this tragic case.

That is so sad, and Casey did an excellent podcast of it.

This episode really brought home to me why Casefile is so special. I consume a lot of true crime media, and at times I have needed to press pause and grapple with moral questions about why I am interested in it. And Casefile is one of very few shows of any type where I have never had to ask myself about that because I readily identify emotionally with the victims and actually feel about them as I would feel about somebody I had met before and knew was real. The research, production, writing, and presentation is so skillful and so unimposing. It's like watching a story through a camera, not hearing somebody explain to you why you should be having feelings about something, which is the feeling I always get when a presenter talks to me like they're my buddy, or like "isn't this awful??", or even worse the ones where they are like, clearly reveling in lurid descriptions of the crimes. Just sayin, wow! It's the only podcast I have ever chosen not to listen to while working because it seems dismissive to listen without at least 80% of my attention. And especially during covid times, it's like a special treat when a new one comes out. Thanks so much to the whole team.

When he started detailing the evidence left behind, I was thinking those can’t be unsolved. He literally left blood and fingerprints at the scene’. But here we are :(

Maya George

I enjoyed that he got ‘fanny pack’ in there hahaha

Maya George

I think Casey tries to weave in "nointeen nointy noin" in as many episodes as possible.

Jobe Makar

Researching other sources, evidence points to a skater - possibly the son of someone on military duty in Japan.

Michael

Such a good episode otherwise. I love it when you can ‘take me there’ the society/community where the crime took place. That did not end the way I thought it was going to 😭😭😭

Maya George

Unsolved murders are the hardest for me to listen to. I cannot imagine what it’s like to be a relative who has lost a loved one to such brutality and still have no answers after all of these years. I almost made it through without crying until the part about the detective that has kept in touch with the mother and makes her meals. 😭😭😭

Mandy G

Wow! The detail and history that you guys put in to your episodes is incredible! The BEST of all crime podcasts I listen to. And I listen to a lot! Keep up the amazing work. You are truly appreciated.

Jan LeBlanc

Great job on this one. Really well written and narrated!!

W Triplett

Why do you spoil?

David Rogosaroff

I hate cold cases so much 😭

Natalia Lucano

@David oh that’s funny coz I haven’t quite listened to all cases yet. I am getting there but today I was finishing up case 106 Peter Nielsen part 2 😂

Stefan Bradley

There has been a Japanese case before. Case 107!

David Rogosaroff

What?! Murders don't occur only in Australia, USA and UK?!

Bob Trenwith

Ohhhh somewhere new!
