Case 74: Eric Coy

On the morning of January 24 1987, nine-year-old Eric Coy hopped on his bike to make the one-mile journey to his cousin Eddrick’s house in the Northern Californian town of Martinez. The two boys were best friends and it was a trip Eric had made countless times before. Eager to get there as quick as he could, Eric took a shortcut.

Just 15 minutes later, a group of children found Eric’s lifeless body near a footbridge at Alhambra Creek. He had been stabbed multiple times, but by who? And how did they get away undetected in such a short amount of time?

In 2023 (so like 6 years after this episode was recorded and released), a man was arrested in connection to one of the cold cases mentioned in this episode, the 1987 murder and abduction of 6-year-old Jeremy Stoner in Vallejo. DNA evidence cleared the weird guy who was tried twice for that case, and led investigators to Fred Marion Cain III who is now 70 years old. I found articles from 2023 that say Martinez police were looking into Cain for Eric Coy's murder as well, but did not find any followup to indicate he has been linked or cleared.

That interviewed officer is really intelligent. Makes for a pleasant change. I'm enjoying going through the back catalogue. I discovered Casefile in the time when Casey was still doing everything on his own. There is real pleasure, in the sense of the quality of Casefile, when coming across episodes where the intricacies of the story have slipped from memory. It's like a bonus. Then there are also episodes which rightly deserve a relisten simply because they are so well done.
