For the concept behind the picture, its a illustration of a middle age univers, this specific landscape is a valley close to a great battlefield, the defeated knight will try to reach the hero shrine you can see in the background (statue of knigth in the fog)
They have to walk... wounded and reach the shrine to plant their banner at the bottom of the statue, the legend say if you reach this sanctuary the gods we heal your wounds... of course that's not true... but there is hope for thoses dying soldiers.
