2024-08-03 02:43:47 +0000 UTCI'm going to guess that "promoting" in this context is saying that advance chapters of works are available on non-AO3 sites. I've seen authors that link their various site pages - thing like "My work can also be found on: * FF.net link * QQ link * SB link * SV link ..." Which I think is mostly done so that people know that copies of the same story are authorized and not plagerized.

2024-07-28 06:02:17 +0000 UTCIt's part of their terms of service that they never enforced, though looking at what's happening with archive.org, I understand it a bit better now why they've suddenly started hitting people. Basically, when they were made, they've chosen to classify themselves as an archive for preserving the history of fanfiction and culture. To do so they have to rely entirely on donations and ban promotion to cover their asses legally. Currently archive.org is trying to avoid being shut down due to issues with DMCA. This is likely an attempt to avoid anything similar happening on AO3.
